Help! Engine light

I just got a throw out bearing replaced and my interior noise was worse than ever. Turned out to be the first shifter boot was not snugged down and man was it noisy! Also found a broken motor/transmission mount. My truck is not radical so others may want to check theirs. It was broke (96, 5-speed, 4x4) just inside the ear that acts as an exhaust hanger, in between the bolt that mounts to the mount and the bolt that mounts the plate to the transmission. It would be hard to see.

Anyway, I have a leak that has been going on for awhile but it is getting very bad. I thought it was an oil leak, and maybe it is, but I don't seem to be going through any oil. It is on the left side of the engine and it soaks the side of the engine, the prefilter, and pretty much everything behind it to the rear of the vehicle. Tonight I degreased it and drove it a few miles to dry it off and then inspected it. It was already wet but I couldn't find an obvious source. Finally it dawned on me that it might be D-fuel leaking. I pushed the plunger on the lift pump and the rubber felt funny; kind of like it was wet inside. I pulled the plunger cover off and my hand was wet with fuel.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Am I going to go out in flames? If so is that cool? It sounds cool.

I hear the pressure relief valve passing fuel when I pump the lift plunger is this normal?

What is the plate on the side of the block behind the fuel pump? it is flexible and mine is warping. Is this just a damper for the noise?

I will search previous posts but any wisdom/encouragement may be appreciated as I am thinking on replacing the lift pump myself. I have short arms, to short for some jobs.

Thanks

BigYellowIron has the answer (Thanks Adam). I went to NAPA and got a couple of O-rings for about a buck and a half total. Leak fixed. Pretty simple job except for getting it back together because the spring is kind of strong and the plastic is slick. I found a socket in my box that fit and wrapped some masking tape around it so I could get a grip on it. That made starting the push button assembly threads a lot easier.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. I used SilGlide to make the O-rings slicker to help put the push button assembly together. You can get a tube of that stuff at NAPA too.

After my 50 mile drive to work the lift pump and starter were pretty dry but I still had fuel dripping off of the front of the transmission. I decided to have it checked out at a dealer. The mechanic, who is very good, found the offending leak. There is a pinhole leak in the metal fuel return line right by the weld for the fuel line bracket. The fuel was visibly spraying onto the engine where it ran to the back of the block and then came down and blew off to the transmission. Of course this is not common so I will have to wait until Monday for the part.

According Mark, the mechanic, the plate on the left side of the engine is a tappet cover. The cover is metal and has a sound damping material on the outside.

I'll still keep an eye on the lift pump. Thanks for the responses.
