Hello all,

Over the last five years I have gone through alot of trials and tribulations with my Transfer case.

I've replaced the rear output seal at least 6 times as well as other things that might solve the problem of leaking fluid out of my rear output shaft.

this past april/may I finally started getting a vibration in the transfer case.

I replaced my Transfer case last month and have been enjoying a vibration free ride.

However... I am still suffering from fluid leaking out the rear output shaft.

This leads me to believe that the culprit is the rear output yoke. Fine I'll just replace it right???

Working with a mechanic friend of mine we get the vin and all that stuff to dodge to get a new one. NOOooo... We need to provide the whole driveshaft part number so they can identify what part is supposed to be correct. But leaking fluid from the T-case has caused the part number tag to fall off. Which leads me to me posting this dilemna. I have lived with this leaking T-case thing for long enough. (although I think this has been a great rust prohibitor ;) ) So i need a couple of things here.

1. Am I on the right track in replacing the Yoke. (only part left that hasn't been replaced  )

2. Anyone with a 2001 2500 SB 4x4 with an auto and a 241HD mind climbing under their truck and give me their part number on the driveshaft.

I also intend to send the shaft out to CT driveshaft to have it balanced to make sure that's not the culprit.

Any help would be appreciated.

Kevin

Is the yoke worn excessively from what you've seen? If it is worn the new seals probably wouldn't have done any good since the gap would be too big. I can look at mine if you want, don't know if it'll do any good. 97 2500 LB 4X4 auto, hd case.

another option

Another option would be to look into the possibility of a seal repair sleeve. I know they make them for Harmonic balancers and torque converters to repair the groove that the seal has worn in them. I have used them for these applications and had good luck with them. I've always been able to get them through my local Napa or Carquest store. Again not 100% sure they make one for the transfer case yoke but I would think they would.

I think I'm squared away with the part number. I found a 2001. 5 with a 5 speed and the HD T-case.

I'm hoping I am barking up the right tree with this. There aren't many parts left to replace that could be causing this.

I'm just baffled how a yoke could go bad.

Check the yoke itself. Where is it leaking from? is it leaking around the seal, or is it leaking from the plug in the bottom of the yoke? Some of the yokes use a plug at the bottom that is prone to leakages usually this can be solved by cleaning the inside of the yoke with some brake clean , cutting a small piece of cardboard that will slide inside the yoke. Squirt a good amount of silicone in the yoke, and then squish it down with the cardboard cutout. This will solve the leak if it is leaking from the plug.

It's really hard to tell where it's coming from. It looks like it's NOT coming from the seal.

But once the fluid gets out it's just flung under the truck ( My rust prohibitive ;) )

I'll attempt that next when I have the shaft Re-balanced.

Thanks for the help TNL
