I need some help.

I want to come up with a diesel test that when completed and the test taker completes and scores a 100 you could recieve a nice TDR diesel certificate that you can have framed tohang on the wall. My motivation is I am tired of people telling me all kind of gargabe that they know about "diesels". What this tool can do is to educate, bring interest to the TDR and tell people if they want to find out how much they know or dont knoe about diesels. All they will have to do is to log on and take the diesel certification test. The test would not be timed and you can search as long as it takes to pass the test. The only problem we would have is that a cheat sheet could generated to pass the test without having to actually search and find the answers to the test. The test would have to be put into a matrix so that everytime you tried to take it you would not be taking the same one everytime. I dont know about you but I would like to have some kind of certification to qualify myself when I hear the comment like "ford owns cummings". Having this credintial i could say "really thats not true and you (being the uneducated diesel combatant) should try to pass the TDR diesel cetification". The test could be used on other "good diesel sites" and you could also chose whether you want a brand specific or an all diesel test. All meaning Duramax, powerstoke, cummins. Tell me what you think and how you would structure such a test and what questions you think should be on the test. Here are a few of mine and when I think of more I will post them. Also, any questions you think should be on the test please post them. I contacted the TDR today and let them know that I was doing this so if we have enough interest maybe we can make something happen. Here we go, this should be fun. Multiple choice, fill in the blank, calculations anything is possible. We could have different sections technical historical, general etc (If you post a question in this thread you are giving me the right to us it in a test) :)

1. does ford own cummins

2. Choose the correct spelling. a. cummins b. cummings c. kummins

3. what was the founder of cummins first name. . multiple choice(MC)

4. what does vgt stand for

5. what years of the powerstroke used powder metal rods. . MC

6. what does huei stand for

7. what years used the vp44. . mc

8. when did the p7100 pump change to the vp44

9. what is a dual mass flywheel. . mc

10. what does hpcr stand for

11. who manufature the fuel sytems for dodge and GM

12. what are three ways to get more power out of a hpcr diesel engine

13. why are diesels more efficiet than gasoline engines

I have alot more when time permits

PS I am not proffesing to know it all b/c I dont know much but I would love to take a test like this and pass to recieve a certificate. I would be willing to pay $10 for the paper work and a cool bumper sticker.

If you think its a bad idea let me know this also.

i am pretty good with diesels, but off the top of my head, i am not sure of a few of those [like 5 & 6:-laf]

i do know what heui is, and how a hpcr injector works [coil does not lift needle from seat], and how mui and eui injectors work, and how an inline pump works [need to brush up on rotary pumps though]

now, ask me something about a gasoline engine or carburator, and i will be stumped very quickly. my only real gasser experience is when i tore down & rebuilt a ford 4. 6 sohc in school, plus some other stuff i have done on my families/friends vehicles. .

That would be great. Except that with all the knowledgeable guys on this site, it would be a large test. But thats good. Only people who were really interested in it would complete it.

I think it would be along the same lines as the ASE test... ... ... ... Many people can pass them but can not fix a car :-laf :-laf

Bob

not a bad idea, it could be administered on different levels (intro, advanced, etc). intro being general questions about different manufactures (ford, gm, dodge, mb, etc) and engine manufactures (cummins, isuzu, international, etc) and fuel systems (bosch, stanydyne, etc). this gives light duty diesel owners product info and a general understanding of whats on the road.

the advanced level could go into diesel theory and function. comparing n/a to forced induction, turbo to superecharging, combustion events, timing, heat exchange, wastegates, etc. this would be more intricate for guys willing to put forth the effort to really educate themselves on diesel engines.

course the real problem is finding someone with the time and skills who is willing to develop the testing and be able to keep it going with what would end up being the satisfaction of knowing they helped thier fellow man. lot of work for very little compensation.

some dork would just take it over and over till he figured out all the answers, then he'd post up the answer list, and we'd all be certified masters... wait, it's the internet... we're already certified!

There's a bunch of items in there that appear to have happened after 1993. I don't think 1st genners should have to answer the questions that may be outside their belief system :)

What you could do also is like the FAA does.

when you take the written if you get a question wrong

it asks you more question in that same area.

You pretty much never get the same test twice.

i think it would be worth the time to develop the test. i am sure cummins and some of the other mfgs might be interested in helping develop such a test. the more educated the general public is about diesel power the more support they get for clean burning diesel technology. also if the general public knows how to maintiain a diesel they have lower warranty costs. most of the time when you drive a diesel off the lot all you get is a smile and a wave from the dealer. most people dont know to drain the water from the fuel bowl or change the fuel filter etc. education is key to the future of diesels... right now all people in america can talk about is hybrids. i think this certification idea could have a very broad sweeping effect on the perception of diesel power in america. before you can win the hearts and minds of americans towards diesel you must educate them to the benefits of the diesel and if they take the time to educate themselves you will have diesel fans for life. If educated they will realize that a little more noise and smell is actually the responsible thing for us americans to put up with because of the benefits far outweight the negatives.

14. In 2006 the epa stated that if 1/3 of americans switched to diesel powered vehicles we could reduce the entire amount of oil imports that we recieve from this country: russia, (saudi arabia), iran, iraq

15. what kinds of plants can biodiesel be made from: rape, soy beans, corn

16. what does ulsd stand for?

Forrest,

You are missing the point. I dont want to be a diesel mechanic. I would like an online test for the diesel enthusiast to see what they know and if the testee is up for the challenge and scores well then you get certified and get nice little piece of paper work you can frame. Is this a good or bad idea. For those that are reading this should is this something you would attempt?

-What are common failures for turbos: lack of oiling, overspinning, backpressure, all of the above

-turbos can spin up to what rpm: 8000, 10000, 200000, 2000000

-how many rods per journal does and 6cyl inline engine have: 1,2,3,4

-how many rods per journal does a 8cyl v styl engine have: 1,2,3,4

-what is an approx max psi does a common rail fuel system create at full fuel: 2600psi, 26000psi, 260000psi, 1200psi

-in general how often should a fuel filter be changed on a diesel engine: every- 3000miles, 5000miles, 10K, 25Kmiles

-what is best way to empty water out of the fuel system on a regular basis-drain cock valve on the fuel filter,. pump air into the fuel tank to disperse the water, add a fuel additive, wipe the fuel nozzle before filling up with diesel

Would we accept it(ME). I don't know, probably not today.

I think it's a great idea but... .

You would have to have so many questions that the person does not

get the same question twice in any period of time.

Say if they had to retest.

And if they had to retest what would the waiting(study) period be?

The program would have to "remember" the weak area of the tester

and stick them with those types of questions again.

I like the idea but it could prove the person knows how to search the internet

for answers. Not that they actually KNOW the material.

If it were an online test and I take it. I pass the test.

Does this prove that I know the material or my friends sitting next

to me know it? See what I mean?

The test would have to be timed and I think a waiting period if you do not pass

and not like 24 hours. I mean like 2 or 3 months.

Make it "worth" the time and effort and study put into it.

I do like the idea and I would like to be part of the team that devloped it.

Pete

Many test already out there

1. Diesel trivia

http://www.dieselpage.com/trivia.htm

If anyone can score 100% on these tests, the first time, my hat is off--you are a freaking genius, Mr Gump.

If you can gain a passing grade, I salute you.

If you try again and again and learn something, I am impressed. :p

I have a diesel engineering degree, and I did not max these tests...

2. Knowledge about fuels
