anyone good at getting a razor sharp edge on their knives? i am looking a getting a knife sharpener and need some advice on what to get. was looking at the lansky but wondering what else people are having good luck with. not too worried about the cost as long as it does an excellent job. #ad

I've worn out several Lansky kits and would highly recommend them. I was never able to get my blades as sharp as I wanted free hand and the Lanskys solved this.

I liked the Gatco setup I had, but the stones were of inferior quality, imo.

I've since gone "electric" and very happy I did.

if the stones aren't diamond or carbide, keep looking. You want a hard edge for it to stay sharp, and it takes something much harder to sharpen it.

Maybe I am an old schooler at 31, but I prefer the old arkansas whet stones. Have a lansky liked it, easy, but a good arkansas surgical black with a little practice will give you razor edges.

Once you've used a DMT Diamond Whetstone you'll never go back to the real thing. ;) I've used whetrocks my whole life. My daddy taught me very early how to use one. He still has the neatest little whetrock I've ever seen. It's by Case and it measures about 3"X1"X1/4", came in a plastic case, and it's called a Case Moonstone. It's white and kind of clear looking, very hard and almost as smooth as glass. He can put one keen edge on with it. Using a whetrock seems to be a dying art.

;) Try the SMITH system it may take longer but it works. you can get it at lowes hardware and it's not expensive.
