New Toyota Turbo diesel set to lead the class

Yeah I know, it is like saying a dirty word, but I need some info please. Can anyone tell me what the differences are between a 97 Powerstroke and a 99 Powerstroke diesel. My dad has a 99 Superduty with a bad engine, and we have access to to used 97 PSD that runs great. We are wanting to get it running so we can get it sold, but I don't want to just shove it in there if it isn't the same thing. If it were just used as a long block, and used everything else from the 99, would it be right? Thanks in advance, Nicholas

I did post it on thedieselstop.com, but I only had one guy reply, and while I am appreciative of his answer it wasn't exactly what I was looking for. Thank you though. -Nicholas

I'm no PSD expert, but I was under the impression that the earlier 7. 3 PSD's had forged steel rods (stronger) and the '99's and up had powdered metal rods (weaker). I'm not aware of any reason you couldn't use the '97, but my knowledge on the subject is lacking.

Good luck,

Dave

Never done it, but I think it could be done. Will probably need to swap the ECMs also. The '97 wasn't factory intercooled like the '99 is. Wouldn't think it will be a problem to swap that stuff either. There are several aftermarket companies that have intercoolers for the pre-'99 trucks. Banks, ATS and Hypermax, for example.

One other place to ask around on, would be http://flatratetech.com/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi

Good luck. :)

Boy they sure look different on the top side - The block might mount the same but I think that is about it.
