I have a good 9 foot stake bed with new short and tall sides. It has a dump unit on it that is overkill for a 1 ton truck. The dump is rated for 6400 lbs, but it's light... weighs 230. It's basically a new dump and the bed and stakes are choice. At the moment it's on a 72 ford f250.

I'm looking to move the bed to a 1-1. 5 ton truck. The ideal truck is a 1 ton, 4x4, manual trans, with single rear wheel (because of the narrower stake bed width) and the shortest wheelbase possible. I could do an extended cab, but don't want the 4 door for this one. If it doesn't have air bags on it, I might consider adding them. It won't see hardly any miles, so I can't justify much over 20K, but I want the best reliable truck that I can still play with. I'm probably going to make it run faster and jump higher over time (if it doesn't already when I find it), and since it won't see too many miles, I figured I might as well have fun with it.

I've been trying to sort out which combination is the best, between 12 and 24V, and the different trannies. I'm pretty much thinking a 2nd-gen is the best bet. Plan B is to find an F450, but then I'd have to look at a ford, and I really don't want to do that.

I was hoping for a little help from you guys that have experience with these 2nd-gen's so I don't waste money moving the dump to the wrong truck, so any suggestions would be appreciated.

My 01 3/4 ton is rated only 200lbs lighter then my friends 03 1ton dually. If you can find one with 4:10 gears you would have the perfect truck for loping around a dump / salvage yard.
