I think it's time for a new exhaust - Questions

Straight Pipe vs. Aftermarket Exhaust

I have a 1996 cummins 12 valve that i just recently order a three inch tuff country lift and now i am looking for some engine modifications such as air intake, chip, exhaust. I was wondering if someone could give me some advice on which are the best brands and what they would do if it were there truck?

Exhaust... ... ..... Best fit. MBRP

There is no "chip". It's all with the turn on a screwdriver and a wrench and adding parts.

Air intake? I'm a little confused here.

First, fix the dowel pin. Second, any significant changes you make to the engine will require an upgrade to the transmission or clutch, particularly the auto.

As for exhaust systems, save your money. The most restrictive part of the exhaust is the turbo housing, unless you're over 350 horse at the rear wheels you won't need any changes downstream of the turbo.

Ditto the intake system / air filter (other than tossing the filter housing-to-fender boot).

Take a look around TST's web site http://www.tstproducts.com/ They offer a variety of power products and gauges. The fuel plate is the only real engine change you need http://www.tstproducts.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=119 along with some gauges to properly monitor what you've just done.

You'll get a lot of opinions about a lot of products like Banks, but for waaaaay less money you get the expertise of a guy like Mark at TST - Cummins factory experience and all.

No, I have no connection to TST, I'm just a satisfied customer.

Thanks alot Turbo Thom and flyairam i will apperciate your advice and i can not wait to get this project started. I have one question about the transmisson what upgrades would i need?

Do you have an auto or manual? Please fill out your sig. Also look into local chapters/northeast. The Mason Dixon TDC's having a Spring Fling dyno event on April 29th. Many people going to the event can help you... . Ken

I would recommend a governor spring kit with the plate change. It depends on how you drive, what you tow, and the condition of your transmission if it is an automatic. I towed many miles with a #6 before my 98 transmission went south. The 95 auto has towed alot too and has 230K with 118K of that running a #6 plate. The secret IMO is keeping the rpm up enough (1600-1800rpm) to keep the transmission pressure up. Good luck!

On my 96' I had a custom grinded plate. I also ran the 3k GSK (governor spring kit). I did a 4" exhaust before I did the gauges. Not sure if it made a difference with EGT's (probably not). I also did a Scotty II air intake. This did lower my EGT's while towing. Didn't really make a difference when empty. EGT reduction was about 100deg. Start with gauges. I had a 3gauge pillar. It created a blind spot. On my 06' I avoided the 3gauge pillar.

Don't forget maintenance items. Starter contacts, fuel supply/return, preheater filter kit, soft line from preheater to lift pump, trac bar and maybe a DSS.

The GSK will make towing alot easier. You'll be able to hold a gear a few more seconds before shifting if this is a manual. Find a local Bomb party. Someone at the Bomb party might be able to grind your plate for free. Don't forget the KDP.
