I need help from somebody thoroughly familiar with the steering column construction. I had no problems with the disassembly and removal of the old stock bushing per the directions enclosed with the new bushing. The reassembly process went good but now I have a problem.
The bushing fit on the steering shaft as smooth as butter so a little lubricant per the instructions and I drove the bushing home until the collar was seated. I performed this in the truck and here is the problem. I encountered quite a bit of resistance and after finishing, I noted that the shifting arm (automatic trans) had moved into the column a bit and now the shift linkage running to the transmission is hitting the insulation down by the floor board on the firewall. When shifting in the truck, the shifter moves somewhat hard but it also looses registration and park isn't always park, reverse and neutral and drive also not always as indicated.
I need to bring the shift arm on the column out a bit and I'm not sure how to proceed. The lock plate is also in place on the steering shaft (supplied with bushing) holding the bushing at its present position.
I thought that I might cut the supplied lock collar off and hopefully the shift arm might be able to be moved back out but I'm not sure how it changed positions in the first place.
