can someone tell me how to remove the front rotors, are there any special tools needed? any advice will be appreciated. the truck is an 01, 3500, 4x4.

just put new....

pads and rotors on my Y2K 2500. It was very simple. . .

Remove the two bolts holding the caliper in place. Set caliper to the side. Pull the pads. Remove the two bolts holding the caliper mount in place. Remove the mount. The calipers will now slide right off.

It is no more than a 1 hour job from start to finish. I put the Severe Duty Bendix Pads and matching rotors on mine. So far so good.

As a side note I know that previous years were MUCH more difficult to replace. I have a good friend who has a '98 and a '99. I know his '98 was a BEAR to replace the rotors. Not sure about the '99 since it has less than 30K miles on it...

I would think yours would be similar to mine since yours is a Y2K+1...

Good Luck...

Jeff

Have something around 12 inchs high to set the brake assy on due to the brake fluid line is kinda short. I used a small bucket inverted. I have a 2001 and this was the simplest brake job i have done

I was going to suggest that as well. An inverted 5-gallon bucket like the orange ones that can be purchased inexpensively at Home Depot are just the right height to set the caliper on. [assumes front axle is on jack stands]

Special tools? Yes, you will need a 12-point* metric socket for the four hub/bearing assembly bolts inside the knuckle.

* A 6-point socket will not work as the fasteners are 12-point cap screws.

Also, a puller will probably be required to remove the hub/bearing assembly from the front axle splines. A liberal dose of a quality penetrating oil ahead of time on the splines (after removal of the axle nut) should aid in removal.

I'm assuming you don't have a factory service manual. I would highly suggest you purchase or borrow one prior to embarking on a project such as this... I only covered several of the facets of the rotor R&R.

John,

I am pretty certain the rotors on an 01 will come right off.

Us guys with the older trucks get stuck using the pullers.

The rotors on my '01 practically fall off when I do brake pads. There may be a little disposable washer that I've read is put on there while the truck is being assembled. It's easily removed.

thanks guys, but all except kaptn have 2500,s (I think the 2500 is diffrent because of the hub spacers) question is do I have to remove the bearing assembly or just the hub spacer then the rotor? thanks again.

The 2500s are the same as 3500s except for the wheel adapter. All 2000 and up the rotors will fall right off without removing the hub assy. 94 to 99 trucks are a PITA.
