I would change out the crankshaft position sensor. Should be on the driver's side near the starter.

He has a 12 valve, no crank position sensor. He changed the engine speed sensor that is mounted above the damper.

Does the 1994 have a vehicle speed sensor in the rear differential? I don't have a wiring diagram for that early a model.

No it doesn't. The VSS is mounted on the trans tailshaft (2WD) or the transfer case. The differential sensor is for ABS up to '97. '98s and above take both readings from the differential.

Someone said something about it having to be clocked?

Yes I did, on the other forum. Did you look at it? The c shaped clamp that holds the adapter on has bends at the ends. Those bends fit into slots on the adapter. Depending on how many teeth are on your gear determines the position (clock angle) that the adapter is rotated to. The symptoms you described with the speedo jumping around are the same as the symptoms I described on the other forum when I had a failure. I'll bet you haven't ordered a factory service manual either.

Yeah I did actually as soon as you said its a lot more helpfull than the ones you can buy in parts stores. I couldn't find one locally. Ordered it online. $110 bucks

As soon as you (GAmes) said it had to be clocked I crawled under and checked it out. I seen what your talking about. The adapter that the sensor plugs into. It's round and held into place with a C shaped clamp that fits into some holes and there's a bolt securing the clamp. I didn't mess with that at all when I replaced the VSS. Just unplugged it and put the new sensor in the hole. I would do more with it but I don't know anything about it without that book

OK. When you get the book find the section about setting the clock angle. It is probably in the correct position, but you need the diagram to remove the assy and make sure the square drive shaft isn't broken. If it is it will catch and release which sends the speedo into utter confusion. In another place in the book is a description of all the circuits that go into the speedo, including the PCM. One of those wires could be chafed through and grounding intermittently.

Hey guys new to this forum but anywho had all the same stuff going on. Tach would just drop out speedo bouncing, cel on and off, in and out of od wouldn't stay locked up turned out to be two wires rubbing front driver side underneath. The wire loom that runs under driver battery down under front of truck and across bottom of radiator up to passengers side. Rubbed through right by horn on driver side. Hope this saves you some $
