My trucks hesitation is makin me crazy. The dealer can't figure it out, they say that everything is normal! My truck keeps hesitating from a stop and blowing a fairly large plume of black smoke at the same time. I just changed my fuel filter, oil filter and air. Then I put in some injector cleaner and went on a 500 mile road trip. At first everything seemed fine. The truck didn't hesitate and seemed to have the same old get up and go. When I got back from the trip, the hesitation started again and the smoking and now the engine seems to be louder and it seems to hang before bumpin up in gears#@$%!. Does anyone have any ideas on what this could be? I don't think it's a transmission problem, being that the change in filter and the additive seemed to alleviate the problem, even if it was only temporary. Is it a bad injector or a air intake problem? Someone has to have some ideas. Please any help would be great.

I'd lean toward bad injector hanging up at idle... . mine was experiencing similar symptoms before I changed #2. Mine had a definate miss when restarted warm and I found it with a temp gun on the manifold. Good luck

I would find someone with a Scanner capable of doing the injector cut out test and see whats going on that way.

Mine has had a mysterious hesitation that started last year around November. I thought it was related to the ULSD switch over at the time. I took it to two dealers and a diesel specialist and no one could get me a straight answer or help me out. Basically driving the truck around town, temps at normal operating range. Traffic light changes, give some throttle then the truck sort of stalls, but doesn't die completely engine is still going but RPM drops and the "Diesel Sound" sort of goes away for a moment following lot's of black smoke then every thing is good after that. The only way I can make it stop or not do it is to run (Power Service) through the tank, and it's good to go for at least 3-4 tank fulls. Ironically my wife has taken over my CTD as of the last two months, she drives it daily now and has not reported this mysterious-intermittent stalling. Let me know what you come up with.

Just wondering if anyone has any ideas on this topic…. My '05 Just stalled/ Hesitated again after about a two month sabbatical from not doing it. It's done this to me 6-7 times since October 2006 and did it to my wife, who didn't believe me for the first time last week while she was driving home from work. Always same scenario, truck up to normal operating temps. Come to a stop sign or light, light changes green, giver'er some throttle to go (not floored) and the truck falls on it's face, doesn't die completely but has no acceleration and blows a thick black cloud of smoke. After a second everything is fine and the truck drives like brand new. Power Service seems to make it not do it for four-five tanks, it's usually after I've forgotten to treat the tank with PS for some time two months or longer and it will surprise us when we least expect it or incidentally when some clown is tailgating dangerously from behind. Any help would be appreciated, my wife is scared to drive it, but we have no choice as I drive an '07 Tacoma (Work-Truck) daily and our 2500 CTD is her daily and our weekend vehicle. If we can't figure it out soon I'm going to have to get her dare I say something else **sadly** we both love this truck but it's scaring us and worrying us. It's got 52K miles on it YTD has had an Edge/ Attitude box on it since about 800 miles and is otherwise stock from there. It still gets 14. 8 mpg combined which is what it has always gotten in real driving conditions (not babying but not hot-rodding) everything else is solid and has held up well since new. This hesitation just started being a problem since the 48K mile marker.
