Need Help W/ TC, or transmission, Or What

I have a 95 4X4, 3:54, and automatic. This morning it acted as if the O/D button had been pushed off, however it wasn't. It's never done this before, nor have I read any threads that deal with this. RPM's at about 2250 @ 55 MPH. I tried pushing button off and on several times, stopped and turned engine off and then restarted, shifted between park and all gears, and still the problem exists. I would appreciate any ideas to remedy this. (I know,get a new TC and have transmission gone thru ) It's still dark out, but will go check fluid levels later this morning. Thanks in advance.

I started having similar problems recently with mine. It is a '96, and the first problem was exactly the same, but shutting down and restarting fixed it. Next the convertor "hunts" on and off when o/d is off, but this is intermittent. Then the thing decided it does not like to upshift from 1 at all. You have to run right to the governor, then back off throttle entirely and it will shift. You must do this for 1-2 and 2-3. Somebody please help us!

The PCM doesn't allow 4th gear to activate until several conditions are met.



It requires 35 mph, the "OD off" button NOT activated, and most importantly, sufficient temperature readings from both the transmission temp sensor and the engine coolant sensor.



Is the weather getting cooler in your area? I can't remember the exact temperatures required. You said this happened early one morning (i. e. still dark outside). It's highly likely that the truck wasn't up to operating temp yet and thus nothing is wrong.



Personally, I stuffed a resistor in my transmission temp sensor's wiring harness to fool the computer into thinking it is always at ~200° and I never have this problem.

I'm with Chris. It sounds like your transmission Temp sensor amy be on the outs. The transmission will not go into OD unless the fluid is 80 degrees. Sound like your PCM isn't finding out the fluid is 80. From what I understand this is a relatively common problem.



Like Chris you can use a resister to fool the PCM or buy a new sensor. If you have a service manual there is a section about testing the sensor so you can determine if that is for sure the problem.

Cooker, my trans has a Dun-Rite convertor and a Goerend VB. Resistor to fool computer on pressure. This setup has been in for just under a year with no problems until last Sunday. Has only been driven three times since, and the problems are multiplying quickly! I thought at first that it was the TPS, haven't tested yet, but now I don't think it is that, or it may be that plus other problems.



Where are the instructions on how to test the TPS?

Unfortunately, IMO (and I am no expert), but it doesn't sound like it is your TPS.

Cooker, I agree. Initially when it was just the Lockup, I felt that it could be the TPS. Now with all the other problems cropping up, I think there may be something more serious going on.

Problem Found

With all the indicators going towards the TPS, I decided to just have a look, and sure enough, the wire harness had somehow worked it's way loose. Probably my fault as I had attempted to check voltages a few weeks ago, and perhaps didn't get it back together right. Thanks for your ideas.
