So saturday I found out the trans fluid was mixing with the coolant, from what I've seen its most commonly the torque converter cooler on the lt side of the engine, in front of the firewall. lookin into it I found out the new part will cost me $620 with the 30% discount I get from dodge! I've seen others change to an auxillary trans cooler with an electric fan, is this a safe alternative to the over priced factory part? I dont see why it wouldnt work. just wondering who else my have run into this problem and what you did to fix it? Anyone else have this happen? All your advise is appreciated very much!

You can swap to an air/oil cooler but the factory cooler also serves as a heater in cold weather. As the engine warms up it in turn warms the transmission. If you live in a cold climate I wouldn't recommend that.

Couple questions for you... where are you, and what year is your truck? I have a factory cooler here off an 05. I do not know if the plumbing on it is factory or had been modified by the previous owner.

Please provide me with your Engine Serial Number, that cooler is a Cummins part and will be a lot less money purchasing it from them.

That stock cooler is a good design and works well. I wouldn't try to reinvent the wheel in this case.

Just my . 02 worth.

Scott, provide me the ESN from the '05 and I will see if it is the same part number that his engine requires if you want.

You can purchase that Heat exchanger form the manufacture. . or distributor. The destruction of this unit is always related to lax of maintenance, (Vibrations) ruff roads Etc. the unit cannot survive 50k+ fluid changes or 5 years 200k+ coolant service internal corrosion. . the last 1 we purchased $129. 00,as suggested keep the factory setup. If mixed transmission is done.

ok, well it's an 2005 2500 and I bought the truck Feb. last year it had 37k on it when i bought it and now it has 52k as far as I know it had the original coolant and trans fluid. I live in Wa. state get alittle cool weather but nothin crazy. the ESN is 57296537 I thought coolant was good for 5 years? I plan to service the trans every 20k to try and keep it alive as long as possible. thank you all for your help and opinions!

There was a recall part some time ago, but I do not recall what model year it was to look up the recall part number. Usually the recall parts are priced better.

Unfortunately that engine is long gone. All I have left is a small pile of parts.

Cummins is quite anal as a rule for marking the part number on the casting somewhere, see if there is a 7 digit number on the outside of it.

Current Cummins part number is 4930582. Should sell for 335. 00 or thereabout.

Has two previous part numbers which are 3957532 and 3979534.

Cummins has 78 on hand at the factory.

Found the PN for the recall cooler, CBLAC442, fits 2003-2004 and retails for $176. 00. I don't know why it would not fit more years as the OEM cooler fits 2003-2009

sag2,

That is good info, will try to save it somewhere.

Did you notice if the PDC's showed any in inventory???

I am linked into my local Dodge dealer and can see the stock they have on hand, but have no visibility of the PDC stock levels.
