Little history first

Father in Law bought this truck from an acquaintance that had wrecked the truck but didn't really have insurance so it wasn't totaled. Driver feel asleep and hit median wall on driver's side. Truck is an 07 2wd 3500 drw with 6.7 6 speed. Damage was limited to front bumper, head light assembly, upper and lower control arm, tire and rim, front corner panel, drivers door, and bed was replaced with flatbed. He has had the truck for about 2.5 years he repaired it all and has drove empty and loaded for the most part trouble free. Has had cel on most of the time dealer has worked on it and ran updates and usually about 2-3 weeks later cel comes back. Code is always for low voltage but they couldn't find it anywhere. He has drove it over a year and a half with light on with no problems. About two weeks ago on the off ramp it dies and will not start back it is like it is dead but lights and everything else power wise works. Starter never tries to engage. We tow it to shop leave it and forget and leave the key on. Batteries dead shop disconnects batteries and recharges it starts right up. He brings it home starts it off and on a few times durning the week all seems ok. He leaves town for a few days in another vehicle comes home starts it and drives to town and back hooks up trailer and drives and gets a load of hay gets half way home and it dies again and won't try to start back just like before. Tow it back to the shop they hook it to computer and they say the ECM vin doesn't match truck and the ECM is causing all of this and needs new ECM.

While this may or may not be correct I have no Idea and the history of the truck prior to my father in law is questionable. Is there anywhere to send the ECM to be checked and to have them reprogrammed, if not who is best place to buy ECM from?

VIN not matching doesn't mean a new ECM, means the ECM needs to be flashed with the correct VIN. Starter is activated by the TIPM and the way those go it probably needs a new one.

Highly questionable diagnosis form the shop. If the VIN was really wrong it would die fairly soon, if it even started, and you would likely have codes for the mismatch.

They can be intermittent. Once they get a bug in them no telling what works and doesn't, depending on what is exactly is failing.
