:confused: IM in need of some help guys, anyone with knowledge or first hand how to on the Borgesson shaft i have it bolted back to the rag joint just can't seem to get it coaxed back up on the splines, it will start but then stops. . All splines are in good order so its not that, is there a trick i need to know about.

I greased the splines on the steering box also... .
 
Are you talking about getting it back on the steering shaft? I think, I'm not possitive, that there may be an alignment spline. Someone will jump in here and verify this. But I would look for one.

I usually take a dead blow hammer and tap on the joint to help push it on. I usually put antiseeze on the splines to help. Its been several years since I installed my borgeson, so I can't recall doing anything special.

Wyatt check the splines and see if there is an alignment spline,that is one wide notch that you need to line up with the spline on the gear. I don't remember one but it may have had one.
 
i don't think it has that on it, as the old one lookes exactly like the borgesson splines... must be that i just need to tap on it with a hammer, i know that extending the shaft is very hard, it slides but with alot of pressure to pull it or push on it, I know its greased plus with 13yrs of being on their the old shaft liked to never got it to move but it finally broke free.
 
I forgot you all have rust up there. That's what I like about working on a Florida truck, everything unbolts just like it did new. Probably just need to dress the splines up a little with a small file.
 
hmmm it just hit me to i would rather not touch them with a file, would a rough sand paper or scotchbrite pad work? i have some cleaner to remove the grease i put on their. . this morning at 615am it was 45degrees, 1 1/2 hrs later 29-30 degrees. . :eek:

okay got the shaft on, cleaned it up with some brakKleen and then hit it with scotchbrite pad, tapped it on with hammer, and i was able to pull it off by hand. Okay now for the set screw the way she sits the set screw is toward the frame at about the 1:00 position. . hmmm i set the screw at tight as i could but im curious as to how im going to file or even make a flat spot without messing up the other splines :confused:
 
well i decided to put the shaft on and tighten the set screw as tight as i can get it without bending the allen wrench then tightened the nut down on the setscrew, the only thing i know to do as i have no way if filing or making a spot where the set screw seats as its on the opposite side from me in towards the frame.
 
don't have a dremel, or a sanding drum so..... Im thinking as hard at it is to pull off and seeing that it could work loose, im going to keep a regular check on it, i hope the setscrew took a bite into the splines, like i said impossible to get at where its positioned. Unless someone has a crafty idea

If you can get a spring loaded center punch into the hole, you can dimple the splines with it. I can't picture what you're talking about with the set screw being hard to access. I just turned the steering wheel to access mine, it was enough to ease the job at least. I removed the set screw and put the center punch into the threaded hole in the shaft, then dimpled it as mentione d before. If you can remove the shaft and then use a regular drill with a rotary file or grinding bit designed for a small air grinder, it willl further flatten the spot for the set screw to grab. That's the cheapest way I can think to index the shaft without buying any tools other than a bit for a drill maybe. ;) If you want it to be notched for the set screw to dig into. A little blue locktight on the set screw and lock nut will provide enough protection for me though to feel safe. I check my truck over for loose bolts every few weeks though.



Hope you get it, I just installed the borgeson on mine recently, I must have got lucky, as it went in with no issues or access problems. I poliched the splines on the box with a wire brush and cleaned up the column stub with a 3m pad on a grinder. I turned the wheel to gain access to each set screw.

I also have a 8ft long rollchest toolbox to work out of though, and years of wrenching has made home repairs on the truck really easy for me.

Hey guys I got my Borg. shaft right from Borgeson, and the mechanic there just put the set screw on the flat spot that was already there and then reset the steering wheel. 20,000 on the truck now and no problems.
 
Yeah im going to get that set screw fixed to where i do feel better about it, might try and find the spring loaded center punch, and duh on getting to the set screw it came to me that hmmm i could just turn the steering wheel. . What can i say sometimes the simplest things take the longest to figure out but i was also not wanting to mess anything up thats why it took me longer to get mine on.

Slim not sure but on the '92 the flat spot and the spot where the factory pin was is further toward the begining part of the steering shaft, i read the instructions from Borgeson and they recommend their shaft be all the way up on the steering box shaft so thats what i did which put my set screw up near the steering box on its shaft, as they say it makes for a better and safer connection which i can understand having all the splines mated with alot more area of them covered.
 
They must have changed their design, mine is just like the stocker with the pin that you drive in through the coupler off to one side, and it goes in the groove or slot in the shaft.



Mine went on just like the stocker, course mine has been on since early 1997.

if you go to their site from the TDR link, and click on full size dodge, you will see the shaft, sounds like they have changed the design since you got yours.
 
There must be different desines on the output shafts, however mine had the flat spot all the way up the shaft and the new box I just got has the same thing with the flat spot going all the way up. Maybe the Canadian trucks are just of better desine!!!! :)
 
Hard to telescope

Ready to put borgeson on tomorrow and I'm wondering if all of them are as stiff to telescope out as mine is. Should it slide easily? I had to tap it down a bit just to get it started out and it is very stiff to pull out even after oiling it. Is this the way all of them are? Seems like it will be a PIA to get on the steering box splines. BTW it's straight and not bent or anything. TIA
 
Yes they are all like that... I found out the reason was due to the tight fit of the rubber boot at the slip joint... it basically acts like a shock does due to the tight fit... you're good to go bud... :D:D
