I just changed my fuel filter for the third time. No problems with the first two but after bumping the starter 3 times, I tried starting it. Started right up but died after about two seconds. Tried bumping again 4 times and then another start. No go. I then pulled the new filter out and checked for fuel. It was pretty full and measured to be about 18 oz. Tried it again but no firing. What did I do wrong?

Make sure you install the new gasket with the new filter. You could have an air leak there. I usually put the flter in with a new gasket then hold it up there and finger tighten the nut on top and give the canister a twist from side to slide to make sure the gasket did not pop out. Then loosten the two nuts on the top and bump the starter to fill the filter. Try carankig it over with your foot to the floor. If it doesent fire the bleed #1,3 and 4 injectors.

Yup, I got the new o-ring on and hand tightened the top. I even torqued it to 25# afterwards. I didn't have to loosen any nuts on the previous times. I looked just now but didn't see any nuts on the top of the canister; signature doesn't specify but it is a 2001. 5.

Pat could be either air in the lines and or a dead lift pump. Do you have a fuel pressure gauge?

if its air try cracked a couple of injector lines and check for fuel.

Bob, I certainly have thought about a dead lpm and if there is a good place to discover you have one, it is best to be in your driveway. I've never loosened an injector but why not. I will put it off until tomorrow though. Thanks.

I just changed my filter yesterday too. started right up. you can just put the pdal to the floorboard and crank for 30-45 seconds without doing any damage.

Prior to cracking any injectors, try loosening the banjo bolt with the Schrader valve at the VP44. Bump the starter and turn off the key so that the transfer pump runs. If your transfer pump is pumping, fuel will come out at the VP44, displacing most of the air in the system. Then try what Bob suggested regarding cranking. I'd loosen injector lines if all else fails.

Your Ram doesn't have " two nuts on the top" (actually plugs in the test ports). The test ports disappeared model year 2000 with a newer style canister.

Worked like a charm. Makes me feel better about the transfer pump. Appreciate all the inputs I got last night. Thanks to all. :D :D :D
