OK, I haven't seen the leak myself, but I would like to get some opinions on what it may be.

Here's the situation, I am currently looking at a '94 5spd. , dually with 210K on the odo. I talked to the guy and he has done a lot of upkeep on the truck recently... . new upper & lower ball joints, tie rod ends, new tires (6), has had the truck since 14*K, and has changed the oil every 3K. Well, we got to talking on the phone for a while and the truck seems to be perfect for a '94, but I asked him about the dowel pin and he said he didn't know anything about it. I told him what it was and what happens when it falls out and he said, "Well, that you mention it it has starting using oil the last couple of weeks and the front cover looks like it has been leaking. But, it can set in a spot for a day or so and never leak any oil on the ground. "

He drives the truck 120miles a day and says that he had to put a quart in every week for the past couple of weeks.

Should I be concerned? I mean, when I buy it, I am trailering it home and pulling the front cover ASAP. Also replace the crank seal and pull the head to get checked at the machine shop. Probably put a marine head gasket back on. Think I should be worried?

Also, around here there are a lot of 12V owners and a few of them usually spin a main bearing at around 200K. (neighbor spun his a month ago). Any procedures I can do to have "peace of mind" from this happening?

I appreciate any help guys, I can do just about all the work myself. I have worked on Cat's & Cummins before, but not a 5. 9 but they are really all the same when it comes down to it.

P. S. Oh... I got to have this truck, besides having new tires, practically new front end, 5 spd. , 4. 10 LS, front brush guard, gooseneck hitch, and brake controls, he is asking $6,000 for the truck and it seems like a really good deal. Just hate to drive 5 hours to look at it, if someone thinks there is severe engine damage.

Sounds like a good price if the engine is not damaged by the KDP.

A quart every week is NOT good. But it sounds like the guy is honest about it, enidently he doesn't know what a failed KDP can do to the engine.

I would definitely inspect the front cover area before I bought it, with the idea that if it looks AT ALL like the KDP is the problem then that brings the price down some more.

  Anyone else have a comment on this?... I thought the bottom end was bullet proof..... "Usually" ... ... ... ... ... Nah,can't be.

If the truck is leaking a quart/week ,it shouldn't be hard to find the source... ... If its burning a quart/week,it might not be a good deal.

Yeah, the guy is real honest about it. I am heading over there Monday night to see it Tuesday morning. I am going to buy it even if it has a bad leak. I am pulling the front cover and head and have the head checked and resurfaced at my buddies machine shop and put on a new crank seal and head gasket. Also check the bolts and loc-tite them.

I talked to guy owner again last night and he said he hasn't even drove it since I told him about the KDP. He said he won't drive it til I get there Tuesday morning. I will trailer the truck back since I am scared of the KDP.

He also just spent $2,200 on it a couple of months ago putting on 6 new tires, brakes on the front and back, new upper & lower ball joints, new tie rod ends, bushings, etc. He also has all the reciepts. Even with a leak this truck is worth $6,000 to me.

It already has the front brush guard, goosneck, brake controls, and even has the paint scheme I was wanting... . blue over silver two tone. I think the good Lord wanted this truck to be mine.

Someone let me know what I can do what they think about what to do to check the main bearings. I guess since I will have the front cover and head off that I will zip off the motor mounts and lift the motor up a couple inches or so and take the pan off and pull out the torque wrench. I don't know if there is any other way.

Wish me luck,

JD

Truthfully I have no experience working on the bottom end of this engine, but I've never heard anybody on this board complain about spinning a bearing at 200,000 miles--and I have read a of LOT of guys on this board going 200,000 or 300,000 or even 700,000 miles with NO problems on the bottom end.

But if you are worried about the bearings maybe Plastigage them. That would tell you about the clearances.

I have also read that Cummins at one time "recommended" installing new rod bearings in these engines at 300,000 miles. However, that was a few years ago, and I've not heard of anybody on this board actually doing that.

Good Luck! Sounds like you are going to get a decent truck and make it a Great Truck!

Yeah, that is the thing I was thinking no one on this board has ever heard of anything. There are about 20,000 memberes on this board right? I wonder hopw many Cummins owners there are in the U. S... ... . over a million I would think.

Over here in Northeast, TX I would guess there are over 100 CTD for every 50 square miles. The market is flooded with them, both 12V's and 24V's. The only CTD that I have heard of spinning a main bearing are the 12V's and they have at least 200K on them with heavy towing. Now, I have only heard of about 7 or 8 of them happening around here, but that is enough for me to worry. Just like the KDP on the '89-'99 CTD, or the #53 blocks crackind on the '99 24V's.

When the vacuum pump seal on mine started leaking it was all over the place. When I finally got around to changing it I was losing about 3 qts between oil changes. I think the reason it started to leak was because the l-shaped bracket that holds it to the block had a broken mounting bolt and all the weight was hanging off the two pump mounting bolts. It didn't leak while the engine was at idle either, only at higher rpms. If the KDP is good be sure to check the vacuum pump.

I appreciate the info.

I did by the truck and just got back with it a minute ago.

Let us know what you find on the oil consumption (leak or using it ) and also what else you find on the tear down. I for one am interested. I have 157k on my 95 at this time. So far no issues at all.

HEHE, yep I do. First thing is degrease the engine and pull the front cover and head. Will keep you updated on that. May take week before I get started.

In the meantime, I need to redo the interior. Looking for '94-'97 Tan SLT interior dashboard, both door panels, and window motor for the driver side.

I bought a Southwest Fabricators full front bumper replacement for it last night from a buddy.

Someone tell me how to post pics. Where can I host them?
