Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Oil Pan Question

Hi all,

last night (6 degree's) I was leaving resturant and my truck started to studder. When I give it gas it studders and wont go above 30 mph no matter how much gas I gave it. It was also smoking alot. Felt like a dead pedal. No check engine light or any erratic guages. Any ideas? it is an 02' auto

Thank's,

Marc

Sounds like what my tractor done to me the other day. I finally ran it long enough and it cleared up, no problems since. Me and Dad figured it was just some water in the fuel or fuel gelling up.

What would cause the vp-44 to go?

Might be the gas :-laf

Sorry, I couldn't resist... .

BTW, I work near Clinton. What does your truck look like? Just wondering if I've seen it around.

patriot blue, QC, dual exahaust ,TDR sticker in back window. Iam down by clinton often either going fishing at pequest or going to OK4WD for some stuff for my jeeps. Hope to run into some other members sometime.

I had the same problem a while ago, but mine was accompanied by a check engine light. I ran some Lucas injector cleaner on the fuel, and took it to the dealer. By the time I got to the dealer all the throttle response was back, and they analyzed the check engine light, and said it was low MAP pressure due to the Edge chip I have on it now. The check light, and the throttle problem I think were unrelated, but from my limited experience the Lucas injector cleaner is good stuff.

By the way, anyone know of a way to correct that Check enigne light generated by the Edge chip?

Thanks,

BPickrell

Did you install the boost bleeder on the turbo or just put the edge box on with out it? The brass bleeder is required to avoid over boost codes.

I think you have it backwards, the fitting for the turbo increases boost and the Edge Box via the MAP sensor connection to fools the engine into thinking it is not seeing additional boost. SNOKING

me too,maybe?

Greetings, I'm a newcomer to TDR... it wasn't broken so why dig into it??? Can't say that any longer. My throttle "goes dead" around 70mph sometimes (almost always after having run 1/2 hr or more) but it will correct itself if I wait while it maintains last throttle position, or it always corrects if I shut off and restart on the fly.

I replaced ACCP or whatever they call the throttle position sensor, and that improved the condition, but didn't eliminate it. It did throw a code--injection timing failure which dealer said was a one time code and had occurred many many starts back.

The warrantyadjuster at the Cummins shop I work with on our school buses said that early VP44's (mine's a 12-98 production) were prone to timing failure but Bosch has since remedied that. I'd like to know how to get hooked up with Bosch to find out how to make the corrections.

Regarding the lift pump issue, after having installed a fuel pressure guage and seeing no more than 9psi at idle and down to 3-4psi at speed, I installed a new lift pump and saw basically the same numbers. Called Carter, who makes the lift pump and their tech recommended a second pump back by the tank to push fuel as the pump was originally intended to do. I did so, and added another fuel/water separator, and now it idles at 15psi and runs down to 10psi wide open--mileage went up!!!

Anybody out there wonder as I do about vehicle speed sensor? I don't understand why the VP44 would "reset"...

My pride and joy (most of the time) is '99 3500 Club Cab, 5 speed with 4. 10 Differential and about 110,000 miles on it. I watch boost guage, pyrometer and fuel pressure in addition to OEM stuff.

I also run a '79 D 100 short bed with pumped-up 440 (which passes emissions sniffer) and recently got the doors blown off by a 12 valve Ram turning 10. 50's passes at 125-126 mph. Hard on the pride but pretty fun to watch !

How about fuel gelling up. I don't know about fuel stations around you but some in Mich. add a anti-gel agent. I fueled up the other day at a sation that does not offer the anti-gel protection and had close to the same problem. A little bit of Power Service in the tank when I finally got home and away we go. I just forgot to add the power service is all. No problems since.

Good point on the fuel gelling... but last week we were heading back to Puget Sound country from Yuma, Arizona in temperatures up to 70 degrees with same problems as at temps in the 20's.

You bring up another point, that being the use of additives. A local shop which has an amazing fuel lab and rebuilds pumps and injectors for Cat, Cummins and the rest, says that on VP44's they can tell immediately if the operator used lubricant additives or not. They (H & H Diesel) strongly recommend the Stanadyne product line.

I have used Stanadyne in the past and currently use Chevron's Diesel Additive. I can hear a difference in idle noise with or without additive, and it was really evident in my '89 12-valve truck. With lower and lower sulfer content fuels on the horizon, I'm makeing a small stock pile of fuel additive while I can still afford to buy it.

Thanks for your suggestion.

HI all,

OK so I got my truck back from dealer today. Replaced vp-44 under waranty (pump wire attached and ufm under dash) MY dealer likes me I guess. They said transfer pump is ok,so why did the 44 die? I left the pump wire off for now should I hook it up again or throw in some injectors? I know a pusher pump is in order but which one?

Marc

Have them pop test the injectors that they take out and pop test the ones that they put in to make sure that they are in fact good. Then you are working from a known. They put in the 275's and they poped within 100 lbs. On fuel I only get fuel at the truck stops and so far ( touch wood) the fuel has always been dry. Is it better to get fuel at places that do sell alot of it? Still on the same fuel filter from 18 months ago and have only 2 lbs restriction across it well under the 5 lbs that Chrysler and Cummins recommends changing. Buy dirty wet fuel and change the filter?

Hey Marc, my pusher kit just arrived yesterday from Renegade Diesel Performance in PA. I'm hoping to get it installed this weekend. If your looking for a kit give Scott a call. Very nice to deal with.
