Need help with steering pump

I'm a 12 valver, but maybe someone can help. I'm changing my power steering pump. I've got the pump out but I can't figure out how to get the tang that's on the pump shaft off the pump I took out to then put on the new pump. It obviously fits over the shaft; there's an internal hex in the shaft but there are no external threads on the shaft. Is the tang part pressed on the shaft? Should I get a new tang and how would I install it on the new pump? I appreciate any help. lp.

I just wanted to post to document our methods of removing the drivedog from the steering pump. Personally, I think AGR should include a new drive dog since they have a unique part number for the Cummins anyway (pretty sure).



The drive dog is not heat treated. You heated the drive dog with a small torch and pried under its bottom edge with two screwdrivers, moving it enough to get a puller underneath it. I had a spare pump, so I cut the power steering pump shaft entirely off just behind the drive dog with a bandsaw, threaded a bolt into the cut off end of the shaft, put the drive dog in a press with a socket underneath, and pressed out the cut off shaft.



The drive dog does carry a Chrysler part number, 04728162, about $50-60 I think. The two teeth on the one I removed were 1/3 worn away after 110,000 miles, so a new one might be warranted in some cases.



To install on my new AGR pump, I put the drive dog in the oven at 350 and after it stabilized, quickly pressed it onto the cold pump shaft using a standard pulley installation tool.
