Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Need help with transmission swap

I’m changing out a 97 manual 4X4 transmission with a rebuilt 98 manual 4X4 transmission but the top shifter plates are different (97 is round and 98 is square). I talk to a mechanic that said I could swap the top shifter plates between these transmissions.



Is this correct or do I need to get a shifter for the 98? :{

Yes, the case tops will interchange. Or you can source a shifter from a 98 and go that route too. The rails in your old one are likely ok and may not need refreshment as the innards of the transmission did. .
