1990 cummins

was driving it went over a speed pump and truck shut down instantly,i checked the wire that leads to the injection pump it is ok it will crank it just wont start. sitting along side of road... need advice

If it were a gasser with an electric fuel pump, the first suspect would be a darned inertial switch that normally is buried in some inaccessable place. #@$%!

Ok, we are suspecting the solenoid on the pump. You can remove it and take the pintle out, then screw the solenoid back in. This will disable your ability to shut the motor off, you will have to stall it if you have a standard and if you have an auto then you will have to stick the pintle back in there to kill it.

Sitting beside the road you might as well give it a shot.

So remove the solenoid (#7) and the pintle is right there. Remove the pintle and put the solenoid back in. As I said, if the solenoid is bad or if you have lost power to it this will bypass the shut down.

A short in the wiring harness! It could be entirely in that engine wire loom. I had an intermittent start/nostart issue with my 91. 5. It was a hair puller! Check fuses and your voltage also. Just to be thorough. GregH

If he pulled that pintle out and it still didn't start that should eleminate any electrical issues, but I am basing this on industrial "B" habits.

Dodge coulda' added something of their own.

GGonzales,

Sorry that didn't work, a lot of times when they quit it is that solenoid or the wiring that runs it.

Was worth a shot... .

Also, check and make sure the manual kill lever is in the forward position. It's a little, spring loaded lever, about 2 inches long, on the side of the pump. If the spring has broken and it's partially rolled back, it will kill the fuel supply..... IIRC..... I think that kills the engine even with the electric solenoid disabled..... PM Cerebrusiam for exact details on that pump, he knows them forwards, backwards, and thrown through the window!!

My only other idea would be the KDP as suggested above, has fallen out and has broken either crank or cam... ...

#@$%!#@$%!#@$%!KDP nearly killed my cummins!!#@$%!#@$%!#@$%!

I hope it's an easy fix for you. I'll watch this post as my buddies both have a 1991 and 1992, so just in case.

i put a new injection pump on 6 months ago. i cracked the fuel line that goes to the injection pump, getting no fuel to the injection pump. it has gas i checked tank. if i have time today i have a replacement fuel lift pump that i am going to change. i also learned something new to check and see if truck has cam problems. my friend came and we got a rag and damped it with gasoline and put it over the air intake hose the truck starts just off of the fumes of gas. so i will keep informed on the situation and let u all know the outcome thanks agian
