Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) need ideas on where to look for a part

Hey guys, I'm not sure where to look or what I am looking for. I changed the tire size on my CTD from the stock 215's to 255's all the way around and now my MPH's are off as well as my odometer, and i would say quite a bit. normally i wouldnt care, and just figure out how far im off and compensate in my head. But considering i (according to the odometer) went from 530 miles to a tank to if im lucky 350. i dont have perfomance problems or fuel problems or anything so i know thats not what happened. i have heard on here someone say that you can buy bigger gear ratios for the transmission to match a change in rear end gears and bigger tires and all that. would that help me and ifso what size ratio do i want. TIA

I dont know what size of gear to recomend but any speedometer shop can help you out. Most larger cities have one. If you dont know of one check with any dealer and ask them where they send theirs for repair. My trk was off about 7mph when I bought it and the dealer sent me to a speedometer shop and it was covered under warranty. They even gave me a certification that it had been corrected and was accurate.

These are a 29 and 30 toothed speedo gears that are fitted to the transmission/transfer case.



I would try the '29 going from 215's to 255's?



If you need installation instrruc. ask the Dealer to peruse the Factory Service Manual when picking up your parts.



It's an easy job and the retail on each s/b less than $15.



If you have a 98 12 valve, you have an electronic speedo that requires and "abbot" adapter or other "electronic" correction box of your choice.

What you can do is re-gear it to get the odometer as close as possible. 9It's just a snap on plastic gear, that plugs into the drivers side of the rear portion of the transmission. Just take out one bolt, pull the clip off, and it just pulls out the side). Don't expect the speedometer to be right just because you get close with the odometer. Pull off your dash trim, and take off the plastic instrument panel bezel, I think it's 6 or 8 philips screws. Pull the speedo needle off it's post. Drive your truck down the interstate by stop watch or GPS, and get an exact reading of how fast you are traveling. Then, without changing your speed, stick the speedo needle on at the correct speed. It will be pretty accurate at any speed. Works great, I've done it with mine.
