WIFE WALKS WITH A WALKER HAS TROUBLE ACCENDING INTO THE 03 4x2 DIESEL... CAN ONLY LIFT ONE LEG UP ABOUT 6 INCHES. . SHE HAS 8 INCHES OF PELVIC MISSING FROM MUTIPULE MYELOMA CANCER. . WAS WONDERING ABOUT THESE NURF BARS AND POSSIBLY A SET OF AMP RESEARCH STEPS. . THAT FOLD UP AND DOWN???? HAS ANYONE TRIED ANY OF THESE STEPS ON A 03?? WAS WONDERING HOW FAR OFF THE GROUND THEY ARE WHEN EXTENDED??? TKS DOC

Nerf bars would be a bad idea in my opinion due to the small step surface. I think you want something wide. A running board would be closer to the truck interior than the ground making the second step less than the first when getting into the truck. I think the Amp Research steps might be the best in your case, but I don't know how low they go on 2WD trucks. They extend lower to the ground than a conventional runnning board. You might contact your Dodge dealer or Amp Research to find out how high the first and then second steps are when lowered.

If the Amp Research steps seem like a valid option, but are still too high, it may be worth investigating having someone fabricate replacement parts for the vertical bars to get it to drop even lower. I am considering an '03 4x4 and may need to do something similar for my wife; she needs knee replacement on both knees. Another option I have not fully investigated is replacing the bar on the front with a longer one that can span to a half length step below the main step.

There is a 2" extension kit by Amp Research to bring the step down lower. Be careful of getting it too low or the step up in the cab will be too big. See the below link and scroll to the very bottom of the page to see the 2" extension kit.

I have a set of Kodiak steps on my '03 4X4. Kodiak makes standard and long reach steps, but on a 2 X 4 the standard would probably be low enough. They have worked great for 3 years!

I installed Dee Zee's aluminum, diamondplate running boards on my '03, 4X4. The older I get, the taller the truck gets, for some reason!!!

The Dee Zee's work great, also. Well built & strong.

The other advantage to the running board type systems is that they provide you with stonechip protection from the front tires, also. So, you get multiple advantages.

Some folks don't like the looks of running boards but, I'm much more interested in the functionality.

Check out the steps made by Ranch Hand. They are strong and have the same honeycomb pattern surface that the grills have... or had... . With the honeycomb being slightly raised, in a way, between the holes it provides good traction. Powder coated finish is very durable. www.ranchhand.com

I have the Tough Country running boards on mine and really like them. You can walk down them, really help getting into to tool box.
