Background:
I have been driving a 2007.5 truck for about 10 years. It is a manual truck, crew cab, and is deleted with a Smarty S67ME. Has really been a good truck and does everything I need it to do, but I wanted to trade for an automatic truck with a long bed. I tow about 8500 lbs. on a regular basis.
So shopped around for a while and bought a 99 3500 Auto, long bed dually. Very good condition and well taken care of.
Today I towed my tractor for,the first time and was kinda disappointed in the truck’s lack of power on the hills. It has 4.10 rear end and it just doesn’t seem to hold its speed well on hills. There is no throttle response until you press the pedal all the way to the floor and then it shifts down and really winds up the rpms. This is on a road where the speed limit is 55. 55 is really too fast to run with O.D. off so I’m running in overdrive with the TC locked. Rpms are around 1600. If the truck would shift down out of overdrive or unlock the TC I think it would hold its speed better, but it won’t respond until you mat the pedal.
On the interstate I usually drive 65 max and the truck holds its speed well on the hills. Rpms at 65 are about 2000.
Fuel mileage seems poor as well. Overhead calculator is indicating 16.2, but I’m guessing it’s closer to 10 mpg. No boost gauge or egt gauge on the truck.
So is this what I should expect from this truck or is there something I should check to see if performance can be improved? I believe a more responsive transmission would improve performance on hills.
