I need to change the valve springs to the #65 in my 96. I know I will need to order the Lisle spring compressor from Geno's. Some where I seen a tool that fits into the bell housing that engages the fly wheel and your able to turn the engine over with it. I thought Geno's might have it, but didn't find it there. Anyone know what tool it is and where to get it, and the springs?

Thanks

Crupper

I purchased my springs from (Piers) PDR, I made the tool to compress the springs out of an old piece of perforated angle iron and the tool your looking for to turn the engine is called a barring tool which looks like a huge torx bit that mates to the flywheel or flex plate and is turned with a ratchet or breaker bar. You can also turn the engine using the alternator bolt if the belt is tight.

Thanks BV,

Piers showes only 6 exhaust springs. Is that all you have to change?

I see you got a #11 plate installed in your 96. Do it yours self? How big a job is that?

Yes I only changed the exhaust springs because I don't plan on installing the 4g govenor kit which would need the heavier intake springs.

Yes I installed the plate myself. The only touchy part was taking out the break off screw. I started with the small torx bit and stripped it out and then went to the bigger one (t20 I think).

The TST and PDR instructions are very clear to follow.

valve springs

the 60LB valve spring are needed with the 4k GSK to prevent valve float n e way

i installed them on mine i borrowed the spring compressor from Fulmer and did it myself man what a PITA but i am glad i did it the new springs are quite a bit longer so you have to screw them into the spring compressor to allow enough compression to get the valve clips back in took me about 7 hrs but i maybe kinda slow or it could be by the time i was finished my right hand would not open due to cramping from trunning that compression tool :D

oh well i hope you have as much fun as i did

The spring compressor that you mention is nearly useless - there's not enough room to use it unless your head is on a bench.

There's another tool model (the number is lost to me now) that's MUCH better. It's been mentioned in here several times.

What is a 4 GSK? Do I need to install it also when I up to the heaver springs? Can I do it myself? I have worked all around the motor and did in the KDP on 5 rigs but have left the motor guts alone. Been thinking about moving my stock plate forward or changing it to #11, but it is running ssoo good, (wouldn't hurt to have just a little more power) you know. Big desicion. I'm kinda from the old school " If it runs - run it" (But it wouldn't hurt to have just a little more power) I think I need counceling

4GSK= 4000rpm governor spring kit for the fuel injector pump. You can install it yourself with dexterity and patience - do a search on these forums for more details.
