I am looking for info on the FleetGuard hydraulic filter head HH6960 and the FleetGuard filter HF6713.



I am considering using this combination to filter the transmission fluid and want to make sure I have my facts / parameters straight.



As I understand it the HH6960 has 1"NPT in / out, and a 25psi bypass system with an electrical indicator that comes with the head. I want to put a guage where the electrical sender is so I can watch the bypass pressure build as the filter becomes clogged and needs changing.



As I understand the HF6713 it is a 55gpm, 13 micron, 200psi working pressure, -45* - 250*F working temperature, manufactured with epoxy glues that give it the higher working temperatures.



I am considering puting it after the transmission air heat exchanger as the flow goes back to the transmission pan. I know that it is after the fluid has already gone through the system, but I'm not sure the filter could handle the fluid temperature at the hot line into the water heat exchanger.



The purpose is to remove as much of the impurities in the transmission as possible without changing the transmission lube circuit pressures or flow rates. The filter would be changed at probably 10psi in the bypass circuit of the filter head. Tha value would be read by switching my fuel pressure gauge from the sender on the VP to the sender on the filter head.



Still plan to change the transmission fluid and internal filter annually because of the thermal breakdown etc of the fluid. It would add about a gallon to the transmission fluid capacity I think.



I would appreciate your ideas, comments both positive and negative, problems you see with the idea, etc



Another interesting fact on the filter is that my local Peterbilt distributor can order the filter in lots of 1. Most filters have to be ordered in lots of 6 or 12.

I did something similar on my 79 Cheby P/U-- I used a regular engine oil filter. Hayden trans coolers sells a set up. It too uses an engine oil filter. Infact it is a Fram PH8A or HP1. The same on that is used on older Chryslers.
 
I put one on my truck about right after I got it. Have used it with good results for about 175k now. I went to Tractor Supply & got a wood splitter return line filter by Cross. (less than $20. 00 at the time) It has 3/4" in & out, a check valve, and uses a 10 micron filter that flows 20 GPM. I bolted it to a cross member behind the front bumper on the drivers side, and with some 3/4"-1/2" barb fittings & some transmission hose, & some good stainless hose clamps, spliced it into the hot side of the oil cooler. It's mounted horizontally. It also has a 1/8" fitting for a temp sensor, for my transmission temp guage. Fluid is nice & red at each change, nothing in the pan. Summit Racing had a similar setup, but with little 3/8" fittings. I thought that was too small, would cause a restriction, so went with the splitter/hydraulic set up above. Works fine.

How often do you change the external filter?
