What I need information on is a Cummins 4b. I am researching on putting the 3. 9 into my sailboat but so far I've not been able to find a 3. 9 with less than 150 hp. What I would like is 85 hp. Is there any way to depower one down that much? It's simplicity and parts that are mostly compatable with the 5. 9 is a huge advantage over the new high rmp engines that are making inroads into the sailboat industry.

I posted here because of the need of maximum input. But if either the moderator or Steve needs to move this, please feel free to do so.

You need one with out the turbo, they are rated about what you need. What is wrong with having more power than you need? Bet a turbo motor will give you 85 hp. cheaper than a non turbo would.

The diesel engine I have right now has 60 hp at 3000rpm. I would like an additional 25 hp for a little extra poop if I need it. As it's a sailboat and not a plaining hull, I don't need gobs and gobs of hp. My therotical hull speed is only 8. 1 knots. And this boat is heavy, real heavy.

There are two reasons I do not want a turbo. The biggest is that of the heat. I have 4 Rolls L-16 series batteries in the engine room and the extra heat of the turbo would end up destroying the batteries much faster than if I kept them cool. My engine room stays about 85 max. With a turbo, the temp would dramatically climb. The second reason is the noise. If I have to motor for an extended period. It would drive me batty. There is no way the wife is going to listen to that turbo whine for a 2 day motor trip. And neither am I.

The Cummins 3. 9's I'm looking at right now do not have a turbo, are made for the marine market, are only 3800. 00 for a brand new long block without a core and are 160hp. If I could get the hp down to 85 I would be all over that like a duck on a june bug.

160 HP on a non-turbo 3. 9?? The 5. 9 with turbo was 160 HP until like 1994! I realize the marine applications may have more power because they don't have to meet emissions standards, but I'd like to see proof of a 160 HP non-turbo 3. 9. As HCannon said, a 3. 9 NA should be around 85hp.

What engine do you have now? Will the Cummins' weight make your hull less balanced?

I was looking at a small powerboat with a 250 Chevy inline 6 gasser, thinking how sweet a 2. 4L BMW turbodiesel would be in it... Not to mention marine gas is ~$5/gal while marine diesel is just a little more than road diesel.
