Hauler Bodies

Thouhts on tires.

Hi all,
I am deciding if I want a short bed or long bed truck. I really don't want a slider. So I need someone that can give me dimension from axle center to back of cab. Or if you have a non slider center of jaws to back of cab would be great. Thanks in advance.

We used to RV with a fellow that bought a 98 quad cab short box. He went three years without using his slider on the hitch and then punched out the rear window twice in a week. Maybe consider something like a PullRite or Reese Sidewinder. I don't know much about either just seen the ads.

Very sketchy measurement here, wthout squares, levels or plumb-lines. I layed a folding ruler across my tonneau at approx axle center, and layed a second perpendicular to the cab just below the glass, at the center. They crossed at approx 37". Due to the curve of the rear of the cab, and the vertical taper, this is worst case dimension. I will have my gooseneck hooked up on Thursday to haul my SxS. I can get you a dimension to any point you want, if that helps.

Yes I know it's tight just seeing how close it is.

TFucili that would be great. One thought I think the gooseneck is a couple inches forward of the axle .

I have a slider on my 99 and used it a few times. Better to have it than not as some angles etc. may require the useage.

If you'd like, I can get some measurements for you tomorrow. Sounds like TFucili got a solid number .

I asked similar questions as is likely going through your mind when I bought my 14 short bed and was told by many that with an extended pin box on the 5th wheel a slider isn't necessary. I bought a slider anyway, and in 2 seasons of camping have yet to find a need for it. Not to say there won't be that time but I've been able to cut some pretty tight corners while still maintaining good clearances.

There are days when I wish I had bought another long bed, but none of them have been when the 5th was hooked up.

Thanks JR . Have a long bed now and it's tough pulling out of my property onto our private neighborhood road which isn't city width street so I know the shorty will help . My pin box is not extended so best I can tell it would hit . Plenty of sliders for sale on Facebook market place. I'll get a tradesman as I can't afford all the bells and whistles of the higher end lines.

P-bar; if you have not purchased a new pick-up truck yet you may want to check the wheelbase on the Crew Cab Short bed truck compared to your current truck. They maybe the same or very close to each other. I have a 2008 Dodge Mega Cab Short Bed truck and the wheel base is the same as a Quad Cab Long Bed truck . In 2008, all they offered was a Regular Cab and a Quad Cab as far as a long bed truck. The Regular Cab had a shorter wheel base than the Dodge Mega Cab truck. The wheel base for the Quad Cab and Mega Cab is 160.5" the over all length for the two trucks is only 1.8" different between them.

Thanks Jim yes I see aot of variations in wheelbase and cabs. I have a long bed now. Still trying to figure it all out

One more thing I forgot to mention with a short bed truck is an auto slider hitch. I did have a manual 16K Reese hitch that worked great for 10 years. But, it was getting old and it was hard to get the hitch to release into the maneuver position lately. So, I purchased a 18K Demco Auto Glide Hitch this year. The hitch works like a charm, locks the pin in tight and does not require a capture plate with my pin box that I am using. No more chucking at all plus the Trailiar pin box that I have on my trailer, smooths out the bounce between the truck and 5er. I just wish I had bought the Demco Glide a couple of years ago it is will worth the money.

I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure the gen 3 mega cab has less room pin to cab than the gen 4 crew cab. I use a B&W RVB 3400 companion (manual slider, only uses the gooseneck hole so no need to drill additional holes) We tend to camp off the beaten path a little more, state parks and such where the camp sites tend to be less "groomed" for larger rigs.

I'm pretty sure an extended pin box can be had for most any model 5er at a relatively economical price. FYI.

Thanks JR. Not doing mega cab just standard crew. Still undecided long or short. I have long now.
