Need more air?

Blowing past the wastegate

Converting mechnical WG to electronic..

At WOT, I can hit 1500*+ (end of gauge) on 5x5, and I have a light trail of smoke, I am thinking that I need more air. 5x4 = 1450* @ 80mph, top end of 3rd gear.

I expect that a larger turbo would shove more air into the motor but at the expense of lag, and more boost will do the same but at the risk of the head gasket. I am thinking that I should start out with porting the head and swapping the factory unit with an aftermarket exhaust manifold, check the results, then add a water/meth kit if necessary. Lastly, install an aftermarket cam if I still have a problem.

My goal is to 1) cool down the top end, 2) decrease lag, 3) gain 25ish rwhp. Will improving the airflow accomplish my goals?

TIA,

Bill

Sounds like you are on the right path. Anyone of the mods you have listed above will help. I see you are studded, but there is no mention of O-rings??

Bill, think twice about trading spool for lower EGTs. Been there done that lol. I'm guessing you're not towing heavy or you are turning the box way down if you do? 1500 on an unloaded WFO run is nothing to worry about. I would much rather have that than a lag pig turbo that cooled to say 1350-1400.

Dave, how much exactly did Don's cam cool your EGTs? Any effect on spoolup?

I will say that I just got the 64 on from Industrial Injection and it is very promising. Need a couple days to get used to it's characteristics

It's all subjective. But WOT around 200 degrees. Cruising, 50 -75 degrees and over 100 degrees under mild fueling increases with my light weight trailer out back.

Spool happens a little sooner, but the truck runs better out on top. It was clearly out of air and now pulls on through the upper end.

I clearly have too mush fuel still, especially on 5x5. However, I am going to add some more air in the near future.

The cam did not make the truck feel any different other than making the power that was there more linear. The truck is easier to drive in traffic and does not smoke as muxh when in lockup and accerating after a slow down. Say, I am doing 40mph and traffic slows to 25-30. Before, it would smoke out the street on anything but 1x1. But now it just stays clean and spool happens quicker. Maybe 100 rpm or so. I have a hard time getting specific with that as, again, it's mostly subjective.

I don't want to pollute this guys question with this, so if you have any other questions, drop me a PM.

JetPilot figured out my problem. You would think by 500hp I would have known to hook up a boost source to the wastegate. The DD3s never pushed over 40psi, but the M4. 5s push to 50psi at WOT on 5x5. Hooking up the WG should drop my temps and provide 10-15 hp on the top end. Embarrassing, but now I know.

Although I am very near my power goals, I am still convinced that making the engine breath better, cooler EGTs, faster spool, etc... are good for overall bombing balance, smoother power, longevity, etc.

No O-ring YET. I have been told that the stock HG is good up around 50psi, so I figured being wastegated at 42psi should keep me in the safe zone. I recently started to worry upon seeing 50psi of boost. The studs were a last minute attempt at insurance/safety net, mostly due to learning more about drive pressure. I think I am on borrowed time without the O-ring and expect to have it done when I go with a cam upgrade if not sooner.

No heavy towing, 6500# on mostly flat land, and your right I typically turn the box down to 2x1 when towing.

Dave, I have been intently following the recent CAM threads with great interest. I am definitely sold on improving airflow.

Planning for the spring, thanks for the input guys!
