1999,3500,Dually,4x4,Auto,355,Gears,w/ Van Aiken performance module. I pull a 42'GN Tandem axle Trailer w/ electric brakes about 10,000 miles /yr. Has any one installed an additional engine or exhaust brake, if so what weights are you pulling, what did you install and how much has it helped you?
Thanks, Dale

I installed a Jacobs Engine brake from the dealer and replaced the front pads with CarQuest pads (the good ones) and have had no problems like i had on my '94

I have a BD on my 3500 pulling very heavy loads. Before the BD I wore out a set of front pads and all six trailer brakes in two months. Installed the BD at the same time I did the new brakes, it's been four years and 60k now with no replacement, lots of life left on the brakes. There is no way I'd pull any kind of load without an exhaust brake.

I pull anywhere from 12,000 to 14,000. I put the US Gear de-celerator on mine so it would be under the truck. I've changed the front pads once and am still on the rear shoes at 197K. I know that's to much, so I'm looking to change both soon. Will go with front rotors also. I don't see me ever towing without that exhaust brake again.
. The brake works great with no trouble in 2 1/2 years.

Doesn't sound like I need to, but I will chime in. I pull loads of hay at approx 12,800 lbs. I love my Cummins E Brake, and would never pull without one again. I use it with or without a load, every day.
Don't know about the others, but the E brake is very easy to install yourself. If you get one and want to install it yourself, I will email ya my number and we can get through it.

My TT grosses at 10,800. On two week trips hunting I go out loaded heavy. Would never own a diesel without an E-brake now. Between not having to worry about trailer sway with the Hensley and no worries about keeping the brakes cool, it like going for a Sunday drive.

Get one, install it yourself, and enjoy your driving!

You will need to modify the auto tranmission before you can put an exhaust break on it. Don't know the details as I have a 6 speed. I like the Jacobs/Dodge exhaust break.

FYI, engine brakes are used on big trucks, trucks like ours use exhaust brakes. An engine brakes does some magic with the valves to produce the braking.
