I currently own a 1997, 4x4, ext. cab, auto, 373 gears, with a stock Cummins Diesel and I'm looking to get more horsepower out of it. The only add ons I have is the K&N air filter and a Prime-Loc fuel filter. Any ideas on what to do first?

Gauges, #10 plate, 3k gsk, maybe lose the K&N and get something that filters better, then start saving for a torque converter and valve body. These are just starters, but will really wake your Cummins up. You can see my signature to what I've done. I've added a couple more items but nothing significant.

Welcome to the forums. :)

The first thing when adding more fuel, would be a pyrometer, at minimum to watch exhaust temps.

For power mods, the first question would be, how much power are you looking for? Mild or wild?

My truck is similar to what you have, at least when it was stock. You can see what I have now, in my sig. Should be, with the way it is set-up at present, around the 325-350hp range. The plate is in the stock position at the moment, but will probably be slid forward once a BOMBed transmission goes in. The stocker (namely the T/C) isn't very happy with me, so I don't drive it real hard.

Been VERY happy with the results of the new found power. Oo. :D

Welcome

I am doing what Jimmccarty said gauges #10 plate 3kgsk. For gauges, you will want egt, boost and transmission temp. If I had an auto I would already have the transmission temp gauge. I cooked two trannys in my last truck, (chevy). I learned the hard way. A search on any of those topics will get you lots of info on installation as well.

In my opinion:

#1- Gauges (pyro, boost, trans temp)

#2- BHAF instead of K&N

#3- either new exhaust or a free flowing 3" muffler

#4- #10 plate, 3kgsk.

By the way, your truck should have 3. 55's, not 3. 73's.

Have fun!!!

thanks guys for the info this forum stuff is new to me, sorry I didnt reply sooner been real busy. and yes i do have 3. 55 gears. looks like I have to do some transmission work first its starting to shift real slow into overdrive.

How many miles on the transmission? You might just need some adjustments. I have the #6 plate in my 95 & 98 but am thinking about changing to the #10 and GSK to eliminate the early defueling. My wife smoked a 6. 0 Excursion on the I last week and when I told a friend about it he said those Excursions are real heavy. Last Saturday I had the chance to follow him out of a rest area with a nice long acceleration lane. He had just put a Super Chip set in the performance mode in his 04 D/A. When we got to 55 I was already in OD locked up and the smoke started coming from his Isuzu! I had to back off to keep from running over him! Needless to say he isn't making excuses for Fords and Chevys anymore.

I have 198,000 miles on my truck bought it used with 73,000 so the transmission never been touched as far as I know. So going to change fluild &filter first
