need new tunes

my sterio system is shot! no tape or cd, speakers all work sometimes! any sugestions on what to be done??? I dont know if a cd player can handle the CUMMINS RATTLE !!! I have a crystler tape deck from a 99 cherokee not sure if the plugs will mesh. ?? then still need speekers and wires.

Hey Frank, this is what I have in my truck: Pioneer DEH-P47DH

It is designed to fit the factory hole and sounds great. Once the front speakers fried I put in some Alpine's ($120). This stereo w/ rear factory speakers and the new fronts sounds awesome. Volume is high as usual to get above the diesel hum but the CD has never skipped a beat. Then when the rear speakers go and I replace them it will be even better!

The plugs should be the same and everything should fit the same. The reason for the speakers not always working could be because of a bad radio. Try the other radio and then get speakers if they still won't work.

okay I'll try my newer deck for a while then speakers to see how that works. at an idle (red lights) it will skip a portable 45 second protected player:--) WOW!!!defanitely need acd player soon though!! christmas

Stereo suggestions

I've got an Alpine 3 CD in dash unit in my truck, the unit is

an older variety and I've never had it skip except on rough

terrain and this is true of any vehicle. I've got a D350

2X 1-ton . . no problems. When I put my unit in last year I

changed out the door speakers (6X9's). Now this truck was

looked after but, guess what... . the door speakers were

rotted out. Gave my Radio to a felow 94 3/4 ton owner,

a direct fit. May be your door speakers, give it a check...

These vehicles are 10+ years old... . ever notice how you

don't see many of the gasoline variety around? (well

besides the fact that there were more diesels sold).

I have a Blaupunk cd player in my 91. I bouhgt an mounting plate and harness adapter from Crutchfield for less than $20. Fits like a glove and looks great.

I'm thinking the pioneer always liked them. all the speakers in our trucks 6x9's?? the two in the doors and the two by the seat belts? How'd you get the door panels off??screw driver?

Just another way of doing things, when I installed my Kenwood player I wasn't impressed with the mounting plate to fit it to my oversize hole. My solution was too build an aluminum mount that bolted solid to the truck and the head unit. Then I took another piece of aluminum, gave it a jeweled finish and used that to fill the hole. (with the appropriet cutout).



It took a couple of hours but it looks good and I pity the sucker that tries to rip it off. hehe.



Have never had a problem with skipping, even when doing high speed desert off roading.

f. boyle - I just put in new speakers in the front and a cd player. The speakers in the front are 6x9 and next to the seat belts are 5 1/4 (or at least that's what they're supposed to be, i think). The door panels just pop off with a screwdriver. . be careful not to break the panel. If you have power windows and locks, there's not a whole of lot of extra wire back there, so you can't really move the panel very far out of the way, without disassembling the switch housing. Don't get scared off, it's pretty easy if you can work in tight spaces.

Actually, it is not quite straight pop-off but pretty close. There are three screws to remove: One through the center of the handwell underneath the door handle and two down below through the carpeted portion of the door pannel. You will also need to remove the door handle and door handle bolt. After that just work your way around and pope the panel off - they are held on by little wire clips that go into holes. Theses are a real pain to deal with sometimes as they fall off and get lost - bad design in my mind. Once the panel is free you will need to support it while you press the release clips on the pw/pdl unit (if equiped). Once it is free then pull it forward, turn in 90 degrees and then pass it back through the hole. Now the panel is completely free and can be set aside. It all goes back together pretty much in reverse of takeoff. Again the clips are a hassle. As they get old they lose some of the rubber goop that helps them stay in the retainer on the back of the pannel. So they easily fall out just when you have them set to be pushed back into the door.



Overall, an easy job as stated before. You can have it off in about 5 minutes or less.



On my truck the fronts are 6x9 but the rears are long and narrow 4x10's or something... This is in an extended cab so not sure about the regular cabs.

I had speakers that looked like 4x10s behind the seat also. I don’t care for the sound quality from this size of speaker, and they where old, so I just took them out.



I have the Pioneer CD player that goes for about $200 at Wal-Mart, and comes with a small remote (pretty handy). 6x9 Sony Xploids (sp) went in the doors. A friend of mine bought a powered 6" tube speaker, and it wasn't big enough for him, so I got it for free. It fits nicely behind the seat between my gun racks. It's also got quick disconnects so it can be easily removed.



Most of the time I just like to listen to the Cummins hum and the turbo whine. But if I want, I can listen to a decent sounding stereo that costs less than $300.
