Crate training only way I go when training a pup not to go in the house. Also socialize my dogs, a poorly socialized dog is a lawsuit waiting to happen.
I have two dogs, they keep each other company when I'm not around. Zipper, named by previous owner's kids, is a very quiet minature schnauser. He's the alarm system, my other dog is the alarm response.
My Blue Heeler *****, Sadie, has beautiful coloring and has the working not show conformation. Longer legs, smaller in body and head and can travel with the horse for ever. She is the smartest dog I've ever had, has an incredible memory for where things were left and who was where etc and teaches herself alot of stuff. A friend found her as a 6 week old pup on the highway and gave her to me.
Another friend has a male Border Collie who has not been fixed, neither has Sadie. Lost track of her for only a moment one day... she had 5 male Collie cross puppies. Would have kept one if she had had a female pup... females are less aggressive but more likely to die for you in mho. Apparently the cross results in an even better dog. Not as aggressive as the Heeler and not anywhere neurotic as the Collie (Collies think too much). Haven't decided to breed her to cross or purebred yet.
Sadie is great with people, not so great with other four legged animals. She can be called off real easy, but has to be watched until she believes the other animal knows or accepts the rules. Zipper knows the rules, and even gets away growling at her to stay away from his food when I'm around.
With people, Sadie is never a problem... but I am absolutely certain if any one came after me, she would die protecting me. Why am I so certain?... cause if I wrestle with my girlfriend, I have to make sure I'm between her and the dog. She really liked my last girlfriend... still had to watch. Was good though, meant my girlfriend wouldn't hurt me (she had a black belt in karate) although she promised me should would if Sadie bit her... which would mean Sadie would bite her again... which means I get hurt some more... which means... alot of pain for me and the girlfriend. Funny thing, I wrestle with the nephews and nieces and Sadie's looking at me to be careful... smart dog.
