Okay, brought the truck in for wind noise, vibrations, and deceleration howl from rear end.

I don't know how to explain any further that I know what the heck a driveshaft vib. feels like but they say the vibrations are normal. WRONG ANSWER!

Second, they said the rear-end needs to be rebuilt. REBUILT?!! Brand stinking new truck with some monkey rebuilding the ring and pinion? I don't think so. I want a new off the line rearend installed.

Has anyone had their rear-ends rebuilt or replaced? What should I accept????

03 rear end

Was your truck rear end low on oil from the

Dealer? Mine was at least 3 qts. low, did not catch it till after 7,000 miles, got every thing on paper(If that will do any good)My

03 was a early one, was your's? if your 03 was low that means that the metal from wear is even in the out side floating bearings(in the hubs) ect. stick buy your guns and stand firm,if the rear was low on oil! GWD

curatchko, see if your dealer will let an outside shop that specializes in rearends do the work and still be covered by warranty, just a thought!

my 2001 durango has 30,000 miles on it and is on its 3rd rear end. Dealer rebuilt last two under warranty. IMO. dealer has no clue how to set them up.

Perhaps get a second opinion? A different dealer might be willing to replace the rear, rather than rebuilding it.

I think that's exactly what I'll do.

What's the 5 star 800 number?

The local dealer rebuilt the rear end (Repolace ring/pinion and bearkings) in my truck at 780 miles and now at 8500 miles they are replaceing it with one that is being dropped shipped from the factory. I had to mention the lemon law to them.

Just got back from my local dealer and asked them about your problem, they have see it twice and did a new ring and pinion both times... So they also are not doing a new axel replacement just a rebuild.

I've been waiting on my new rear axle since 12/29/03. It still hasn't arrived. Mine howls LOUD. I hoave no idea when they are going to get it in.

They told me they are putting a whole new axle in mine and I didn't have to do jack. This is the first time it's been in for this problem.

What kind of noise were you hearing?

I hear this ungodly WHOOOOOOO between 20 & 25 my dealer says it is the TURBO!!!!! But i forgot to tell him the TURBOOO is IN the Front not the rear

If stupidity were contagious, dealers would be infecting the entire nation. Sometimes I think they are.

Actually there are several new part numbers for damped rear drive lines for the rear end noise. All ring and pinions make some noise at some speeds, and the damped shaft just keeps the noise from being transmitted into the cab. Before you have the rear diff overhauled, try the shaft first. I think you might be surprised. (but have them call STAR for the PN. If they just order the stock shaft, that's what they will get. )

Rear end whine ?s

To all of those with the whine coming form the rear axle just a few questions.

Does it whine all the time? What size is the rear? What is the problem or better yet what is the fix?

I have the 03 2500 4x4 HO with the 11. 5 rear 4. 10 LSD I have 14400 miles on her and have had a whine in the rear since new BUT ONLY in the winter when it is COLD and only for the first few miles.

I went to the dealer with this last winter and they said it was normal, they would not even look at it or in this case listen to it until the truck is warmed up and driven at least 5 miles, by that time the whine is gone.

Does any one else have this problem, if it is a problem?

I am getting close to the 15K mark and as per the manual have to change the fluids in the differential. Anything to look fore when the cover is off? If I find some metal fillings should I be alarmed or are some filings normal? Anything else to look at?

I Thank all that reply. :(

For once, I agree with the dealer that the cold whine you hear is perfectly normal.

Don't be alarmed by metal filings, and don't be alarmed if the old fluid is silvery in color. If, on the other hand, you've got a differential loaded with metal chips, then you have a problem. It sounds to me like your differential is normal, so you should just experience some silver color to the old fluid.

they just have to put a different shim on the pinion gear. and no the vibration is not normal. I am a highly qualified dodge tech and own a 3rd gen truck. If you dont trust that dealer, take it some where else
