Buy "New" Truck for $1,100 under Dealer Invoice!

Fool Prices, oops I meant Fuel Prices

Neighbor has one, 95, 150kmiles. Lately it starts a LITTLE slugish and then shakes the truck while idleing for 3-5 seconds then smooths out. He already changed the oil. Any suggestions?

Lucky to get 150k out of a PSD. Our fleet trucks are sold between 100k and 130k. Maintanence is too high. Sounds normal for these trucks even when new based on my experience driving them. They do run very strong for the first 100k though. I have found that if you crank the motor just a second longer then you would think they don't shudder as hard at start up (normal based on my experience)

It's time for your neighbor to upgrade???

I must have gotten lucky and gotten a really good one, my old 96 just turned 288k. Any time she gets to starting hard, specially when real cold, it's been glow plugs and/or relay. Getting alittly blow by now, but ain't gonna put no more in the PSD, gotta Ram to finish and be back on the road. I'm dropping in Sandy, UT in the morning. If the steers get me back to Angola, IN I ain't puttin nuttin else in the Ford. Nuther time mine was hard starting cold or hot the starter was bout shot. Might be worth looking in to.

Cheers,

Steve J.

It sounds like air in the fuel system... My '94 idi had a similar problem. After sitting for a while a bit of air would enter the system, when started it would shake or buck for about 15 seconds and then smooth out.

I'd start by checking for possible leaks and changing out the fuel filter.

With that many miles, I wonder what kind of shape the o-rings on the injectors are like. Any fuel getting to the oil? How's the cam position sensor? What's the fuel pressure from the diaphram pump? There is also a pressure regulator valve that can cause low pressure (kinda like the overflow valve on the P7100 pumps on the 12v. Cummins).

There is a injector driver module (IDM), injector pressure regulator (IPR), and an injector control pressure (ICP) regulator.

The 7. 3 litre is a great engine, and I have seen them go well over 300000 miles, granted the HEUI is complicated,I dought it is injectors, sound like a sensor to me,is he using the correct oil?

I have seen guys pull into a 10 minute oil change and get bulk 10W 30 and it foam up and it will cause the engine to stumble.

What oil is he using? I know Rotella T is highly recommended for use in the PSDs. Has alot of anti-foaming agents. If it is the wrong, it is enough to cause poor running by itself. If the oil foams, it won't run to well. Makes it hard to inject the fuel properly when the air in the oil has to be compressed first.

He is using Delo 15W-40. He is checking the fuel fiter (new 4k ago) and O rings, rubber lines from the pump to the tank. If that is ok we are talking about rigging a clear tubing in the return line to watch for bubbles.

No sign of fuel in the oil.
