Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Need second opinion

I am in the process of trying to clean mine too. Checked it out and found radiator is very dirty. It was causing the fan clutch to come on only after driving a short distance. I am going to soak fins with a degreaser and let it soak for 20 minutes and then blast it with water. I really do not want to remove radiator if I don't have to. In the mean time I rerouted the blow by hose to stabilizer to prevent this from happening again. I spoke to service dept at local dealer about radiator being full of soot and they said never heard of this happening and there are 0 service bulletins regarding this.

Clean Radiator!

Checked out my rad last night. After 40K miles, it's clean as a whistle.



Why? Because the truck had a leaking front timing cover from the factory (bolts only finger-tight). The first BOMB with about 100 miles on it was to relocate the blow-by bottle to eliminate it as the cause of the leak. Therefore the truck has been blow-by bottle free all its life resulting in no oily gunk on the radiator.

I used a biodegradable degreaser and let it soak 20 minutes then used regular garden hose and it all came clean. Good luck!

jeepit, I did it Saturday 18Jun05. Pulled the Radiator out, then the Shroud. Pressure washed them with Simple Green, and they came out clean Oo. Relocated the breather some were out back of the transfercase, and it should be happy now.

Good deal. Careful with the length of the breather tube; you don't want it so long that the mositure has time to freeze in it and block things up in the winter time. Make sure it's all down hill so it drains, too.

How far is too long? Mine is about even with the Driver's door, and is sloped down hill all the way. Moose00

I don't know if there's a solid answer to that. That length may be fine. If there's enough radiant heat from the engine there shouldn't be a problem. But I'd keep an eye on it in the cold season 'till you feel comfortable with it. I took the safe (chicken) route and just dropped it straight down and tied it to my sway bar.

I think that I'll leave out back till late fall, then use the last 2 feet of hose that came in the bag, to drop it down. Moose
