I have a Westach temp gauge that I use for my trans temps. Lately it has been flickering to various temp levels or showing no temp at all. At first I though it was a elec. connection problem and checked all of the connections that I could get to pretty easily. I have not gone in and run ohmmeter tests on all of the wires yet. BUT, here's the catch. If I shift into neutral at stop light the gauge moves one way or the other, sometimes to 0 temp. Sometime, when I start to accellerate from a stop it moves one way or the other. Just have not had time to do a thorough trouble shooting session. Anyone got any ideals?

TIA Tom

It really sounds like a ground problem.

I have a different make of gauges, but was having a similiar problem with the trans. temp gauge reading all over the dial, usually high. I thought I trouble-shot it pretty thoroughly and called the Co. They said I most probably had a ground problem and so I tried to find it but couldn't seem to locate any ground problem. I asked for another sending unit. They said they hardly ever go bad, but sent me one anyway. :)

I installed the new one and it did the EXACT same thing. Boy was I

I then did a more thorough search of the ground wire and found a mickey-mouse crimp connection which was loose and corroded. I replaced it and the readings went straight to normal, and have stayed there for over a year.

The gauges I have came with the truck, the brand is "U. S. Gear". When I was fixing the problem I had the gauges out of the pod, and on the back of each gauge, where you couldn't see it unless you pulled it they all said, "Made In India"... ..... This kind of misleading garbage just frosts me!

Check your grounds

tmacc,

What Robert said, I had a similar problem with my old truck. I don't know about your setup but on my Autometer T temp gauge I had to ground the terminal on the back of the gauge to get it to work right.

Isn't it usually the ground?

OK that's two for the ground. I,ll give it check when I get a chance. Must be at the gauge though, because all the other gauges ground at the same spot. I did look at the back of the gauge breifly, and the ground wire was connected. I'll let you guys know what I find.

Thanks,

Tom
