I just purchased a 2001 2500 QC LB 4x4 6-speed HO before christmas. I just joined the club 2 days ago. I deleted the muffler and resonator the 3rd day I had the truck and replaced the air filter with a K&N a week later. I was wondering what kind of other performance mods I could do but still try not to go to wild as I have only 3600 miles on the truck and would like to try to keep warranty in tact. What kind of air systems are available, what are all the abreviations I see everyone using, what is a sliencer ring? I am new to the diesel thing but do have a little info. Also I would like to know about little easy things to improve the looks I already removed all emblems and tinted windows. This will be a slow process as I have about 4 months of college left then I can spend some money. Thanks for eveyones help.

Welcome to the TDR. You can do a search on the treads to see what has been discussed before. There is an incredible amount of info on almost any topic you could name (sometimes too much info!).

As far as increasing the performance of your ride, a fueling box of some sort would be the quickest and least expensive. I used the Edge EZ as a starting point. Notice I said starting point. Once you start, I don't think there is any turning back. I'm sure others will testify to that!

Randy, welcome aboard. As suggested search for topics that you want to know about and if there are any questions left let us know.

I think the EZ will be your best bet for a stealthy type of power upgrade, great power for the money. There are some air induction setups available but I don't know a lot about them. When I start having some lag that bothers me or high EGT I will look into it too. :D

Good luck and have fun with your truck.

ok another question where do I find an EZ I am assuming it is the best? I am also curious about doing things to the motor like the silencer ring delete that I have noticed many of you have done but I do not know how to do. I also see things like AFE air filter and Psychotty Air system... ... all help is greatly appreciated. I have done searches but come up with nothing.

Thanks,

Randy Trammel

The silencer ring is a metal doughnut on the intake side of the turbo, held in by a big snap ring. Take it out, and you'll be able to hear the turbo a little better. :D

The Edge EZ is probably the best stealth(warranty-wise) mod to the engine. It makes a very noticeable difference to low end and midrange power. And it's easy to remove if the truck needs to go to the dealer for warranty repairs. Keep in mind, DC watches this board.

As far as psychotty and other intake systems, I'd think that they'd be pretty unnecessary until you have more mods, like injectors and a major fueling box. But that's just my guess.

Check out the TDR Classifieds too. I purchased my EZ from Piers. There are a number of used EZ's floating around.

Welcome aboard Randy! I too am a relatively new member here but I can tell you this, you have found a great place full of experienced people to help you hot-rod you new truck!

When I first joined, I would log on and read, I mean read for hours. There are a lot of past threads and links to vendors that will get you up on the learning curve really fast.

My truck is still basically stock for the moment, but since joining the board and reading what has worked for others here, I have serveral items ordered for my truck.

On starting my mods, I decided to take care of the "breathing", exhaust and gauges before I did anything heavy duty with electronics. As others will tell you, our trucks did not come with the proper instruments to monitor the effectiveness of hi-po ad ons. The first thing I did was to order a boost gauge, EGT gauge, fuel pressure gauge, and a nice pillar pod to hold all of them. I ordered mine from Geno's garage. Do a search on Gauges and you will get a long line of post. Should keep you busy for a while.

On the exhaust side, unless you are going to get wild in the furture, the straight piping job you did will work great. I wanted to try something different and ordered a 4" Turbo back system from Flowmaster. I started a post on this new system. Check it out too. Most people here have the Jardine 4" system and have had really good results with it.

As far as air filters are concerned, I have found this to be a great debate on this website. Everything is used from AFE, K&N, BHAF (Big Honking Air Filter), to the "scotty air" system. Do a search on these and you will have enough reading to keep you busy for a while. In a nut shell, the main theme here regardless of type used is to get rid of the restrictive stock air box and use a filter with plenty of surface area to decrease pressure drop!

The "boxes" are similar to the choices with the air filters. More than you can shake a stick at. I also chose the Edge EZ for a couple of reasons. I wanted more power but didn't want to get to radical to start with. The EZ is a very simple, quick install and take out in case you have to revist the "stealer" for warranty work. The way it installs is not permanent so the dealer will not know you have been "tinkering" with your truck and try to void any warranty work. Go to the Links area and visit the EDGE website. There are also many other boxes available, this was just my choice.

Sorry to get long winded here but just wanted to share where I was at since I am new to this "diesel game" too... ...

So, get you a cold drink of your choice and do some reading!!!!

Good luck on your upgrades and welcome aboard... .

The chose is EEEEEZZZZZ

The Edge EZ really wakes up that sleeping giant in the ETH. Give it a try, but make sure your fuel pressure is up to snuff before adding any fueling mods.

You can't go wrong with Piers, for information and parts.

You are also only a short drive from the most powerful Dodge Cummins in the country- Thornville, Ohio.

If your up that way, stop in to www.enterpriseengine.com. Careful, you may leave mildly BOMBed. :D

Once again thanks for eveyone's help. How hard is it to remove the silencer ring? are there any side effects? void warranty? I heard you can bypass the wastegate on these also. Is it true? If so waht will it do? What is the AFE air filter? Also when I am ready for it should I run stacks or go with an aftermarket exhaust? If so which one? As far as fuel management has anyone heard of Vanguard? I would like to improve performance on a low budget which I know is virtually impossible but, hey it can happen. Is there an online store for the TDR?

Thanks again,

Randy Trammel

Randy, BOMBed means "better off modified, baby" or something along those lines ;) . Best to stay away from these guys, they will only turn your truck into a dragster and void your warranty :D .

DC is Daimler Chrysler.

All kidding aside, if you are REALLY concerned about your warranty, stay stock. I decided to throw my warranty in the circular file, as indicated by my sig. line, but I pay the consequences when I break something. You'll see this alot under the sig. of the BOMBers... " I am my own warranty station". Very true indeed.

First thing you need to do Randy, is to not use your real name on this board, is you decide to do any performance upgrades. DC has watched in the past and voided members warranties, based on their posts and modifications done to their vehicles.

Not to be paranoid or anything, but you might want to delete your posts, and possibly use a sign-on name different than your real one.

They WILL void you warranty on your engine/transmission is they see what you have done to your truck, while talking on this post.

Hope this helps, Scott

Ok should I modify my air box?? I saw a post from ILLFLEM on how he did his own with an RV tank hose. I am very curious as to what to do and how to do it. Also what works best?
