1994-1995 - 160 Pump & KDP

1996 -1998. 5 - KDP ?

1998. 5-2002 - Fuel delivery issues

1999 - 2001 - Fuel Delivery Issues and 53 block possible ?

2001-2002 Auto's - HY Chargers

I would like to do a break down in years starting with 1994 and going to 2002 with common real life issues not just TSB's

Can anyone help ?

Thanks

Torque Convertor hunting/slipping and TPS problems (affects all years I believe could be wrong tho, but esp. 94-98)

transmission cooler lines and connectors (the plastic quick disconnects, again not sure on what years are affected)

Nathan

1994 - 2002 Steering wonder (trackbar design and bad steering box design)

1994 - 2002? NV4500 5-speed manual transmission 5th gear nut problem. Nut brakes

loose and 5th gear slides back off the splines of the mainshaft.

I don't know much about non-2nd gens, here are the things that were posted about frequently enough to stick in my memory:

- Paint / primer system failure on the middle year 2nd Gen trucks (like my '97). Only solution is strip to bare metal, reprime and paint. The first symptom is tiny tiny bubbles or "pimples" in the paint. If the failure has progressed to the point that the pimples are visible, it will soon progress to the point that the paint cracks between the pimples to form long defects that will rapidly peel.

- Some of the mid-year 2nd Gen owners encountered problems with cruise control being too sensitive - easily fixed by stopping up the vacuum line with caulk etc and putting a needle hole through the block to get slower flow (producing smoother CC response).

- Fuel tank sending unit failures, very common on 2nd Gen trucks.

- Debris settling into the airbox and resulting in plugged up evaporator/poor AC performance on 2nd Gens.

- Some have reported leaks around the "3rd brake light" that is at the top rear of the cab on 2nd Gens, water seeps in and channels along the cab contours to end up wetting the carpet in FRONT. This puzzled folks for a long time.

- Seat foam failure on 2nd Gens, very easy to fix but something you don't notice until it has become a literal PITA.

- Console lid hinge failures on 2nd Gens.

- Throttle cable breaking on P7100 pump engines, there is a TSB on this I believe ('94-'98. 4).

- Fuel shutoff solenoid / relay failures on 2nd Gens.

- Uneven starter contact wear on 2nd Gens, easy fix with "Super Contacts" except for the tight bolts on starter that make removal a PITA the first time.

- Axle lip seals on 2nd gens are sometimes poorly dressed by factory, resulting in seepage that can cause problems with brakes.

That's about all that I can remember off hand, most are piddling issues but they are annoyances that many 2nd gen owners have to deal with at some time or another... .

Don't forget the issues with the rubber fuel hoses that are between the pump and the metal fuel lines wearing out and allowing air into the system. Also fixed with a kit. I believe a lot of people had issues with cheap batteries puking acid or gas that corrodes the cables pretty badly. My radio knobs quit working. My truck was a 96. I think it was also pretty common for the ABS sensor on the back axle to fail and cause the Brake warning light to stay on all the time.

Why did you point out the hy-9 turbo? It is a good unit up to about 325 RWHP.

It is easy to swap when going bigger on power too.

The 3rd gens have a AAM axles, that should be listed.

IMO the HY's on the 2001 & 2002 is a major set back when compared to the Hx's

50 PSI boost with waste gate TB'd and a comp ... . NOT GOOD

and at this point in time 3rd gens are not included in the guide

thanks

96 also has the issue with the paint/primer. I have proof. :-laf I suspect that goes back to at least the early 90's, judging from what I've seen with some first gens.

More of an annoyance than anything, but can cause some problems is the oil breather bottle on the front of 24v engines.

Also, some of the early 24v gear cases can have the KDP issue. There is no way to tell which one you have without pulling the cover.

Track bar play seems to be a common theme for all years of the 2nd gen trucks.
