these 2nd gens are too new for me. i've got a friend who needs a new starter fer sure and i guess a lift pump. how dificult is it to get at? can i trust NAPA parts or should I (HE) spend the money for cummins parts?

NAPA seems OK for the starter if a bit expensive. We recently purchased a lift pump from the local Cummins shop it cost about $170 they had several in stock.

I have had good luck with NAPA electrical parts. As for the lift pump, I would price one at a Dodge, Cummins and/or Case-IH dealer. I have heard of problems with replacement pumps from parts stores.

I got my lift pump from NAPA. The dealer will charge and arm, two legs and your childrens children-if they can get one. I'd stick with Cummins or NAPA.

KSommer,

What makes you think it needs a starter or lift pump? Those things are almost bullet proof. It almost always is something cheap to fix that is the problem.

near as i can tel, the starter got over heated and burned out while teh "profesonal truck driver" owner kept cranking when the prime leaked down thru a bad lift pump. i may be wrong, it's still stuck in the mud down by his camper, ben there for about 8 months

I seriously doubt that you have a bad lift pump. It can't pump air so any little bit of an air leak will kill it. It's almost bullet proof. The most likely problem is bad fuel hoses. If not there are some other suspects. Search this forum about finding air leaks.

You can burn up a starter if you are persistant or the contacts stick. If he burnt up the starter then there is a good chance he burned up the fuel soleniod too.
