is it practical to wire in the back lighting for a EGT and Boost gauge into the headlights so the back light only comes on when the head lights are on?? If so where should I start??

We run gauge light power to dash light power wire on the headlight switch. Lets you turn the gauge lights on with the headlights, but you can also adjust the brightness just like the dah lights.

I forget what color the wire is on the switch though.

i think it was one of like 3 orange and black wires.

I thought it was orange with brown tracer? It may have been black though. I remember seeing 2 wires that were alike so I used a meter to find the variable source. It was easily accessed through a panel on the left side of the dash near door jamb.

Troll is correct. I spliced into the orange wire w/brown tracer through the triangular side panel. It pops off easily. There are two identical wires in the harness on the 06, but only one of them will work. The brown tracer is very dark and looks black. It is simple to test them. Sharp probe or slice open the insulation. The one you want will read approx 2 to 12 volts as you rotate the dimmer (dim to bright). The other wire reads inverse voltage to dimmer rotation, and it never gets to 12 volts. Note: There is a thread in TDR that has a link to the wiring manual download. Your ground connection is easy, there are a couple of black screws under the side panel that connect to metal.

There is/was also a great download at some hemi website that had the entire service manual for free. If you do a search it might come up, I forgot the website's name. If it is not there pm me and we can figure out a way to get it to you if you would like.

This method works with the AutoMeter guages as well? IIRC my installer said that the guages required a constant electric current that would be interrupted by on/off of the lights via the light switch?

I used a test light probe and when I could dim the light bingo.

I thought that I read in another thread that the test light will light up and dim on both the wires, but the key is to find the wire that has a postive 2 to 12 volts. I am not 100% sure though.

I have mine hooked into the dimmer. Question tho, the auto meter gauges (over head console mount) is just a bit to bright, when dimmed the guage cluster is to dim for me.

What I wanna do is add inline for the auto meater guages a second dimmer that dimms things just a bit more. suggestions?

Do you know how your wiring was done to take advantage of the dimmer (also what model Auto Meter guages you have?)?

Thanks.
