Does anyone have a copy of the installation instructions that came with the super duty transmission oil cooler kits?



I just purchased another 1st gen with an auto trans. The super

duty cooler is mounted on the drivers side behind the rear axle,

preventing carrying a spare tire. One hose has been run under the frame, one over. Both hoses seem to be seeping oil at a splice that's even with the back side of the cab. I would like to check and see if it is plumbed correctly.



Can this cooler be relocated to the front side of the rear axle

and still get enough air flow to work right? It is so dirty, I'm going to have to remove it and pressure wash it to get all the grime off of it.



Thanks to any of you who have experience or a copy of the original instructions to contribute.

Superduty cooler

I doubt that it's a Chrysler superduty cooler mounted way back there.



Anyway, send me a PM with an email address that has lots of room to receive large files. I'll start scanning the instructions.



Also, you can do a search on "superduty" in the first-gen forums and find a few pictures and a couple of threads on how trans fluid flows around the truck with a superduty cooler installed.



With regard to airflow, the Chrysler superduty coolers come with a temperature activated fan. They are mounted on the driver's side midway between the bed front and the axle.

I don't think the label for the xtra cooler was "superduty" but there was an optional trans cooler with fan available.

It mouted on the underside of the box, outboard of the frame rail and just behind the box bulkhead.

I think nascar mark has one on his truck... .

PB, I have no idea what they called it if was installed by the factory.



I put mine on as an add-on in 2001; as I recall, there were 10 of them left in Chrysler stock when I took mine. They're long gone now.



The title of the manual that came with it reads, "Super Duty Transmission Oil Cooler Cummins Diesel - 3. 54 Axle Part Numbers 82400846 & 82400995".



Mine used the latter part number.



I've scanned the 15 pages, but the file sizes are too large to put into the Reader's Rigs area - they range from 102kB to 221kB. When I put all those files into a Zip file, it's about 2,000kB.



I guess I'll just have to keep them and respond directly to questions as I see them. Any better ideas?

My 93 has a factory installed transmission cooler, it's about 14"X12" with a fan on top. very rugged built. It mounts to the underside of the truck bed on the first two cross braces of the bed(drivers side) with two 5"or6"brackets that drop it down some. I think the thermo switch is located in the front of the unit. It's a sano mounting. . I thought all cummins autos had these?..... Hope this helps

You have yours factory-installed, which was an option. I had to get mine as an add-on later.



Incidentally, the documentation with this thing states that "This package was developed to provide additional engine cooling protection for customers who wish to increase their maximum trailer tow rating from 12,000 GCW to 14,000 GCW, with a maximum trailer weight of 9,000 pounds or less, depending on model".



Emphasis above was Chrysler's.

I have one installed that is just like yours DBF- and hooked up the same. Do not know if it is factory or aftermarket. Mine has the temp switch installed on the input line (I would rather have it elsewhere). One thing I would do is turn the sending unit down, or open it after each change till fluid comes out, as mine was in the up-right position, and seems like it has a small cavity up there that would fill with air and during a drain, and then be trapped in it and lower the real temp ratings. My temps are kindof cold too - 130-160F.



I would move the cooler closer and not behind the axle. Having 3 coolers is pushing it, especially with one way in the back. Mine has 90's installed where it tapped into the original line too. Mine also leaks a little bit too. The main prob. with all the coolers and lines is the pressure drop can cause lower clutch apply pressures, resulting in early transmission failure. Not sure exactly of the 518 routing, but a lot of trannies will suffer with a restricted cooler curcuit.

No your diagram is nice, it does not have the sender in it though. I was just saying that mine has it on the input to the transmission, which seems to be where most claim to have it, but I seem to like it on the hot side, just like the engine coolant. I have no idea what the fluid temps are like pre-cooler, or what they should be at post-cooler.



My fan I have never noticed on. I want to hook up a manual overide switch on the dash (along with one for the fuel cut-off solenoid too) but never got to it.

MRickard, I pulled my prior message while I checked a few things.



I guess I'd better get under it in the morning and look at it again, and check it against the two pictures from SamsRams where he shows his temp sensor.
