Installation of Temperature Probe in Rear Differential

I may have bitten off more than I can chew, here is the deal. I decided to install a TST power kit, I put in #10 plate slid all the way forward, Boost elbow, and 4K Govner springs. the thing goes like a bat out of hell but I can't get it to idle it shuts down. At one point I had it ideling at 1000 RPM and it stayed till I got home and when I let off the pedal it was ideling at around 500RPM but then it would slowly went lower till it finally shut down when it is ideling there is slight movement in the needle as well (not steady) any suggestions ? I am going to call Piers in the AM but I know he is a busy man and thought I would try here first.

Please School me !!!!

The fuel plate doesn't affect idling, but the governor springs do!

If the governor nuts are too loose then it idles low and dies when you lift your foot off the throttle.

Did you adjust the idle trying to get it to run?

Check your throttle cable for frayed wires and check that your shutoff solenoid is all the way up!

If you have the governor springs under the wrong tension, it will idle wrong, but it's usually consistantly wrong. It shouldn't fluctuate. That leads me to believe your throttle isn't returning to idle or your shutoff solenoid is trying to kill the engine.

When installing a governor spring kit, you shouldn't have to adjust the idle screw. If the idle is wrong you have the spring tension wrong and should fix that first. Minor adjustments are okay, but if it doesn't run you should adjust the spring tension until it does.

You didn't adjust the length of your throttle linkage did you?

Tell us more of what you changed to get it to idle at 1000 rpm instead of shutting down. That might help diagnose the problem.

-Chris

Chris,

Yes I did adjust the idle to get it to run, just by useing the idle screw I haven't touched any linkage.

The throttal cables all look good, and I have watched the shutoff selinoid while a partner cranked it over, she does go all the way up.

I think according to what you are saying I may have to go back in and tighten or lossen ? the spring tenssion

Do you know off hand how many revelutions the govenor nuts should have on them for the 4K springs ?

Once again, all I did to get it to idle at 1000 was adjust the Idle screw.

Thanks,

Scott

I can't tell you exactly many turns, but the stud should stick through the nut about . 050".

If you can beg borrow or steal a set of dial calipers, you can easily check.

If it didn't start or wouldn't run, and then you increased the idle setting to get it to idle. Your springs are too loose and you need to tighten down on them a bit.

Try at least two clicks a piece.

I still haven't seen loose gov. springs cause a fluctuating idle, but I'm always willing to learn.

Tell us what you find out.

-Chris

Strick-9,

Stupid question, how much is a "click"? I backed mine off about 1/2 a turn which I thought was a click. Runs a little better now, but I would still like to lower the idle. My truck is a beast to stop in the snow! It just wants to keep driving! What my problem is a surge at idle. When I put it in gear the idle fluctuates by about 150 rpm's. Just a continous almost like a rocking motion speed of a surge.

So like I said before, I backed off the governor spring 1 click but I am still getting the surging idle, so I have turned up the idle to solve the surging problem. But now I have an ice driving problem! Shoulda kept it stock. NOT! :D

just a fyi, but after talking to Scott this morning we determined that he needs to put his big idle springs back in. Seems he got the gov kit, but no installation instructions, and the brave guy went ahead and put the kit in. He thought the big springs were no longer needed. I'm sure once he puts the idle springs back in, all will be well. Scott my hats off to you for braving the install without instructions, but next time "please" don't hesitate to call, I'm always willing to answer any questions.

Stupid

Yeah stupid me,

We were in the middle of bomb session on a Sunday and I had the 4K springs sitting on the back seat after tearing everything off for the plate and boost elbo install I said what the heck lets go for it thats where things went wrong I assumed (another bad thing) that I simply removed everything and installed what I had had recieved from piers WRONG !!!! I was indeed supposed to keep the bigger springs in and get this there called idle springs I thought you where going to drop the phone Piers when I told you what I did. But, excellent customer serviced prevailed and he sent me an electronic copy in a matter of minutes. Now I have to go to work tomarrow .

I got it all fixed this afternoon and got her idleing around 700 RPM

WOW what different machine, but I have a few more questions:

About how many HP am I at now ?

Will these mods be alright with stock turbo ?

What's hot, as far as egt readings ?

I don't have an AFC spring in right now, and the washer has been modiffied (my6eats8)

I also have the heavier valve springs which I should be getting in soon.

Sorry so long,

Strick-9 thanks for the help I bet you would have never figured that one out ha OOOPS Idle spring

BigBadDodge,

Believe it or not, I was going to ask if you put them back in, but it's hard to get to know people from a single question they ask.

I didn't want to belittle you by walking you through the install process step by step if you just had a frayed throttle cable causing the erratic idle.

I'm glad you got it worked out though.

Swamp Donkey,

Do you have your idle springs in? You mentioned the surging idle. The idle spring is what causes you to feel the 'click' of the retainer nut. You also mentioned not being able to feel a definate click so maybe you have the same problem?

A click is 1/4 turn.

Local

Your out of control pal!:)

Like I said before, us locals are willing to help.

Since you changed coasts it's hard to throttle you though. You've gone from nothing, to all at once in a heartbeat:D

And what's up with this rent a steak concept???:)

I can't believe Scott had a truck BOMBed that much on the exterior with no BOMBing under the hood until last weekend.
