Deteriorata

Its already happening.

I've got a '93 Dodge (of course :) ) B250 van. It's got the 4spd O/D automatic (of course :p ). It leaks. I was underneath it, for an oil and filter change, and located said leak.

It's not from the bell housing, up front (Thank God!) and neither is it from the rear seal around the output shaft (TGx2).

The leaky spot is on the right-hand (driver's) side of the housing, nearly at the rear end of the transmission, back there where it's real narrow, and about 4" forward of the exit point of the driveshaft/yoke.

What's the proper name of that gasket, and how much of a P. I. T. A. is it to change?

Next question: Leaking due to age, and lack of sufficient driving to keep it swelled and sealed, or does that gasket blow and fail due to something inside the housing getting damaged, somehow?

I suspect (not worth much, for the record) that it's the engage/disengage doohickey for the overdrive unit, being so far back.

transmission works beautiful, and shifts are smooth and sure, just like new (doesn't have 70,000miles on it yet)

You first-generation guys may have the same transmission as what's in my van. (Actually, it may also be nearly the same as what's in my truck??)

Are you sure it is not the transmission pan gasket. I bought a 1976 Chevy 4x4 in the late 80's. I swear that the transmission did not leak. I took it in for a transmission fluid change and noticed a leak after that. I took it back to the Goodyear store a second time, and they claim to have dropped the pan a second time. Guess what still leaked. A number of years later, I dropped the pan myself, and put a straight edge to it and found that one corner was bent down. I tapped down all the area's where the bolts go, like my dad taught me many years before, and reworked the corner back into shape and installation it again with a new gasket. Guess what no leak!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D :D

SNOKING

not pan gasket

Howdy, SnowKing...

Nope definitely not pan gasket. While I was under there, that place pink-spotted my shirt, and did so while I was lying on the little puddle that was already on the driveway.

My memory isn't what never was, but if you're leaking between the major housing chunks... we're talking big-time hassle to change. HOWEVER, if memory serves, there's either a sensor for it, or speedometer drive gear back there. Either way, it's sealed via o-ring around a large cylindrical plug, and that o-ring could be bad. It would drizzle just a little and mostly after driving it.

It would tend to migrate to the low points and then drip. That would mean, I think, the area you're talking about.

speedometer sensor? maybe....

Howdy PW! you may be on the right track...

Is it about 1-1/2" in diameter, and kinda round, appearing to be held on by a 2pronged fork-shaped retainer, bolted into the housing-proper?

(not leaking between major chunks of housing :) )

PS----I never realized before what a POS a Chilton's manual really is.

Yeah... 10-4, you got it, uh huh, yup, yessir, I think so, that's it, sounds right, could be, probably, sounds good, etc.

Seriously, that's what it looks like. Held in place by a two-pronged fork. It should have an o-ring sealing it in place. If you remove it, it'll dump on you, though. Probably not a lot of red blood, but enough to wreack havoc with you and your surroundings. So I'd suggesting doing it with a large pan under it or in a "real" shop :)

OK, that settles it (almost)

PW---- I'll probably put the rear wheels up on ramps, in order to drain all the fluid forward away from the "trouble" area. and then douche the whole area with brake cleaner, to remove as much gritty, nasty ATF as possible from there.

Now... . any tricks of the trade? pull straight out, 1/2-twist to left, small parts that "sproing" out at inorpportune moments, and in odd directions? (I'd hate to have it look like "take 3" of a James Bond bomb-disarming scene)

I think it just comes straight out. If there's a gear on it, I believe you need to make note of it's position so as to get it back teh way it came out.

Other than that... I haven't any idea.
