The local Cummins dealer forgot to order my thermostat on Friday (part number 3954194). I discovered this treat of information when I went to pick it up today! Anyway, they immediately ordered it, and even sent a guy up to Denver to pick it up so it would be here in the morning. The problem is, he looked up my engine number, and then ordered a Cummins part number 3931717 (I'm pretty sure of the first three digits, certain of the last four). Does anyone know what they just drove 120 miles round trip to pick up?????

Thanks for any information!

Larry,

Just replaced the stock thermostat in my '99 last Thursday. The part that came out was stamped 3954194 and had 180 degree markings on it. I put the same number back in and I can tell you that from the action of the gage now, the original 180 degree one was probably never opening at that temp... more like 190 plus!!

After doing some searches on the forum, I read that the 3931717 is a 190 degree thermostat. If this is incorrect, I'm sure someone will chime in.

Hope this helps.

Loren,

Thanks for the information. I tried a search and got about 5 pages of threads. Must have missed the one with the information I was looking for. Exactly what I was afraid of. I want the 180* due to towing in the mountains. Seems to get a little too warm on the long grades under load. I don't think they're gonna be happy down at the Cummins dealer tomorrow... ... .....

Incidently, the part number they ordered is 3937171.

Thanks again!

Jim,

Thanks for the information. I have visited the dodgeram.org site many times since 1995 (my first Cummins truck), and yet I always forget what a huge amount of information is there. Besides, I just knew someone here at TDR would have the answer:)
