I need to change the fluid in my '05 NV5600. I plan to pull one of the side covers to drain the oil since there is not a true drain plug. As far as putting the cover back on and sealing it up, what would you recommend? Black RTV Gasket Maker?

I am going back with the recommended Pennzoil factory fill + 1 qt.

TIA for any thoughts.

If it were mine, a PTO gasket lightly coated with any gasket sealer would work for me. I believe I used a blue ATV gasket silicon on my G56 PTO cover gaskets last time I had my coolers off. No leaks so far.

I called Blumenthal's as they are the OEM rebuilder, and asked about my transmission- how much fluid, and which one do they recommend.

I was told to put 8 qts. in it (no coolers or filter), just with the PTO covers. Filling from the top (removing shifter).
With my coolers (Trans-Cool from Geno's)- 1qt extra per cooler.
I told them I'm using one cooler and a filter on the other side. That set up needs 9qts.
If towing heavy- 10qts (only with PTO covers- with coolers add 1qt per cooler).
Change every 18000-25000 miles.

This was for my truck's NV5600. I do not know if they differ in different MY. But if I were you, I'd call.

Also on the fluid- only one was recommended, the Pennzoil Synchromesh, which I have been always using, except once to try the Amsoil's MTF, but it wasn't working good for me.

They were very nice (Blumenthal's), I talked to the service manager.
This is what I have from them and I hope this helps.
Again I strongly recommend calling them for your MY truck. They are very nice and will answer all your questions.
My transmission surely shifts really good and when I start feeling different shifting, notchier, I change the fluid, which is pretty much at the mileage they recommend.
Good luck.

Who was it you talked to, Alan by chance ?

Thanks for all the input.

Thanks everyone! That is a lot of good information. I will call Blumenthauls to be sure. Thanks again!:)

FYI... the bottom bolt in the PTO covers can be used as a drain plug, but it won't get all the fluid out and removing the cover allows for more fluid to come out (mop it out by hand) and check for wear metals.
