I have a 4in straight pipe and need to quite it down a touch. Minor trouble with the local PD. Anyway what would be the least restrictive, and cause the least amount of performance loss?

I too am looking to go quieter. Currently using the banks muffler, but considering the 40" Donaldson instead.

I put the 51" Donaldson on mine to quiet down the straight through exhaust, and I love it. I had to make some hangers, but it was an easy install, sounds great, and is nice and quiet.

I like the sound of the open exhaust I just need to tame it down a touch. I want the most free flowing muffler I can get. How does Donaldson stack up?

second vote for donaldson 51 inch. i replaced a banks with the donaldson on my 99 and noticed no increase in EGT, nice exhaust note and still a little turbo whistle out the end. you'll like this muffler. sounds like a quieted down big rig.

i'm thinking of using it on my 3rd gen as well..... i need a tail section that accomodates for the lack of offset on the donaldson though.

there's plenty of room in your truck though.

My egt's went up no more than 20 degrees at full load, if anything. I am perfectly happy with this exhaust setup. It is a Hog 4" 304 stainless, with that muffler taken out, and the 51" donaldson installed.

i forgot to mention an important issue.....

donaldson = no drone

if you going from straight pipe though you might not notice drone anyway

as for how it stacks up to straight pipe... i don't know how to comapre other than it's quieter but still sounds like a diesel ought to.

If any of you guys have a 4" muffler delete straight pipe... I would like to try it on my truck. Right now I have a 4" banks and it is too quiet. contact me.

SSolderitch, perhaps you should swap your Banks muffler for MRiely's straight pipe. :-laf I ran a straight pipe for a couple of years & I like the relative quiet of my Banks Monster Muffler much better. ;)

The Banks Monster Muffler has a good tone. But for us that are wanting quieter yet, that 51" Donaldson is sounding like a winner.

Now to find one, and someone that can fab the hangers to it correctly also.

I ended up ordering this muffler after doing a lot of reading. It isn't the best flowing, but receives lots of reports of being reasonably quiet without drone. Decided that quietness is the way I want to go, but it might not flow well enough for some. .

Price was 75. 09 + 7. xx shipping. Will need to see it and then decide if it's something that I want to install myself, or take to a shop. Will let you know the outcome. . :)

Magna Flow #14163. If you like the strait pipe you will like this muffler, just takes the "edge" off the WOT but still sounds real good. ;)

If I remember right, I used the regular Hog clamp in the factory hanger to support the rear of the muffler. Then I unbolted one of the factory Dodge hangers, moved it up to an existing hole in the frame, almost even with the front of the muffler. Then I took a napa 4" clamp, welded a straight rod onto it, and put a bend in it to fit into the hanger. It is solid and works well. Seeing that big of muffler outside of the truck looks intimidating, but it fits up in there perfectly.

I like the straight pipe in sound and performance. I just need to quite it down a little. Take the edge off. If it were up to me I wouldn't make any changes I'm just tired of the local PD. Magna flow? Donaldson? Honestly I worry that the donaldson might be too quite for my taste. Sounds like it will be just hair more than stock? A big change comming from wide open. What about EGT's and spool up? I don't want to loose what I gained by going striaght pipe.

You won't loose anything but sound volume with any of the well designed straight through mufflers. What you will loose is the annoying drone that gets to your local police. Give Rip a call.

hey guys, i got a silent might muffler that I bought to try on my stack setup. It's supposed to work really well with regular exhaust. Here's the link Home PM me if interested... thanks:)

An S400 makes an excellent muffler. Besides you can always tell your wife, the second turbo was just to make it quiet! Oo. Oo. :D
