my mechanic said if I could find the parts cheaper than him I could buy them and bring them to him for the rebuild of a cat c-12 -- he says the book says 50 hours to do a complete in frame at $60 per hour or $3000 for labor

parts would be about $7,429 his cost or what he would charge me

reman head

piston pack

main bearing

rod bearing

camshaft

rocker assbly

head bolts

cam

water pump

pan gasket set

oil pump

he said a cat reman would be $15,250 and he already has my motor taken apart- so he has some labor in the junk motor now.

I am self employed with 3 trucks and barely making it so any advice would be appreciated

where can i buy cheap cat parts?

any good used motors near Iowa

anything --HELP

There is no such thing as cheap Cat parts. There are aftermarket stuff like IPB, but I would stay away from that route. If you have a failure, it will cost much more than the little bit you save on aftermarket parts. Give me your engine serial number and I'll get you a figure on all the above items. That would tell if you it's a deal or not.

If you have the time, and a good sized hoist, a complete engine swap can be done in your own shop. I believe you will have to limp it to a Cat dealer to get the ecm reflashed though.
