Hello all,

I'm new to TDR and it's because my transmission just blew up and not enough money for for a shop to fix it. Does anyone have suggestions about rebuilding or buying a reman? A quick inspection showed that the bearings, seals, synchro's, and input shaft all need to be replaced. I read online that the getrag can be difficult to rebuild because of the tight space. The truck has 250k on it and i am the third owner(since 175k), the previous owner did a lot of horse and bull hauling and i do a fair amount myself. I think it's the original transmission. What do you guys think?

thanks Rob

transmission just blew up

It would be helpful to know a bit more than you have stated. I have seen trannys that only needed bearings and seals and I have one apart right now that is as bad as any I have ever opened. It appears that it was rebuilt and installed dry and then run that way to melt down. There are some new parts and old and the things that are good include the main shaft itself and a couple of gears on the mainshaft. All the speed bearings seem to be ok. The carrier shaft for the countershaft is ok and for a round the pasture and only on the farm light duty pickup, the countershaft could be reused. The case rear bracket and throw out carrier/pilot are good. The shift cap and rails can be reused but all the yokes are trash.

The input shaft is burned on the bearing land as well as at the pocket bearing race. The teeth show extreme heating. The one two shift quadrant is litterally broken into bits and pieces. The shift yokes are melted onto the shift segment rings, the syncros are ground and broken. The countershaft is rough and all the gear sets show some damage on the outter edges of the teeth. In short, the transmission isn't even a good core but it has some value since I can use the few parts that are good in building another transmission. It would definitely not be practical to buy all the parts to put this one in service.

I have seen some parts that have been offered for sale that must have been taken from just such a transmission and cleaned with bead blasting. As I said, they might do for a knock around the farm truck but will never stand up to heel to the steel road service that some of these trucks see.

So you must fall somewhere in between a bearing kit and a make over. What did you experience and or what do you see that is wrong.

My 90 getrag front counter shaft bearing went south on me and I got a bearing kit from valley truck parts in grandrapids Mi. $150 plus shipping 6 years ago. 1 800 783 8300 I think is there #. If money is an issue you mite be able to live with some of the stuff that is wrong and just get the important things.

I rebuilt mine myself. input shaft,3rd gear and bearings for about $450.

And at almost 400hp and 20,000miles later its still holding up. Knock on wood... .
