I have looked everywhere for a rebuild/overhaul kit for my A727 transmission with no luck at all.

I want to attempt this job myself because I do have good mechanical abilities and have done some valve body work in the past and feel confident enough, but I'm willing to expand my horizons a bit by doing the whole shootin' match! Would prefer a kit with heavier duty bands and clutches if possible.

While doing the rebuild, I want to purchase a lower stall speed converter than whats on there now (1775 RPM). I did see the part number listed for the heavy duty flexplate on here somewhere and was wondering if the '95 flexplate Cummins#3946161 will work on this application. Also I'd like to replace the steel cooler lines while she's down.

Tried looking in the advertisers web pages and nothing listed for the 727 as far as rebuild/overhaul kits for the do-it-yourselfer.

I can find stuff all day long for the 47RH/RE,48RH/RE but nothing for my lowly old 727 :(

I am at stock power levels now and plan to keep her there for a good while. Any help at all would be fantastic.

My '89, she's been good to me and I want to take care of her.

Your local NAPA store can get you a rebuild kit. I haven't priced one for the 727. But one for a 518 is $250. That does not include a converter. That is for the full rebuild kit.

The biggest thing I can stress is. Keep everything clean. If it isn't clean enough to eat off of. Then it is to dirty. You will need a spring compressor to take it apart the main drive clutch pack. You will need couple of slide hammers to remove the pump assy. A small set of snap ring pliers.

My knowledge of autos is basically, make sure they are someone else's headache... ... ;). But I do know the updated flexplate WILL work in the older trucks.

Have you tried calling some of the vendors? You have to admit, there arent too many guys going to be rebuilding the old 727s, esp behind the Cummins. Add people like us who are BOMBaholics, and the list narrows even more. They may not list them on their webpages, but be able to get parts for them. I'd think a 1500-1550 RPM stall would be ok. I think the 518 is the same internals as the 727, only with a OD unit on the back. Someone correct me if I'm wrong (I have confidence in you, Pastor and EC Jay). Have you cinsidered putting a built 518 in place of the 727? If you have 3. 07s that would make for some AWESOME cruise RPMs.

Excellent replies! I know that the work area has basically got to be like an operating room:rolleyes: sterilized almost:D

Yes, dirt is the enemy here!

Keep 'em coming folks, I'll print this off for references later.

I have always heard that the 727 was the simplest auto to rebuild ever. Half the snaprings half the thrust washers. I did a chevy 400 once and they are the worst. What chavy has in simpleness under the hood (in the 70's) they made up for in the transmission.

Carl,

they were the first ones that came to mind.

I called them this morning and the tech guy said they don't have anything for this application 'cause it is coupled to the mighty Cummins which is a torque monster. They basically have the kits for standard 727 applications behind a gasser

Phil,

The best thing you could possibly do is don't look for the 727 parts from truck part suppliers, but to look into the 60's Mopar muscle cars. Having used this trans for almost every engine including the HEMI, part availibity is unreal. In saying they used it for the HEMI, I see no readon the Cummins can't use the same parts, as the Hemi had 425hp and 490 ftlb of torque. Look in magazines like Mopar Muscle, Mopar Collectors Guide, and Mopar Muscle for info on the 727's. With all the restorations and interest on these old cars, from my understanding, ALL of the parts needed for a rebuild are availible for the 60's trans. Your 727 should be pretty well identicle to the 60's one. Other places to find parts are Year One, and the Paddock. I hope this helps.

I have used about 25- 727 kits from NAPA over the last couple of decades. It is a good kit. I'll check with a friend of mine that just did a 518 for a local person. I'll find out what the differences are inside between the gasser trans the diesel trans.

Philip,

From what I saw in my '89 Diesel Supplement, it only states the converter is a Borg Warner 12. 2" @ 1775 RPM stall speed, and the front pump assembly is larger than the standard 727.

If you get any more info. , by all means let me know:)

I went out and had a talk with my friend. He stated that the gasser and diesel trans are almost the same inside. It has the same amount of clutches and steel plates. The thickness of the clutch plates and steel disks are the same. The front pump is the same. The seals are the same. The main difference is in the valve body/governor setup being tuned for the diesel app.

The converter is bigger/looser on the diesel. His supplier lists two different converters for the diesel. One has furnace brazed hub/fins. The other one doesn't.

But to be on the safe side. I would order the kit for the correct app.

I tried to talk with a TCI rep at the Indy Nationals this last summer about the converter they have listed. But no one at the TCI trailer had any converter experience. All the people there were valve body people. So I left with no good answers on it. :(

My transmission guy told me that all of the kits were basically the same from manufacturer to manufacturer. He showed me once. He had the regular kit that he gets from his supplier and one in Hi performance packaging. They were the same kit. Just a different box and one of them had window stickers inside.
